As a seasoned gamer who has dabbled in acting simulations, I must confess, Vicky Krieps‘ unique talents have left me utterly spellbound! The fact that she can not only bring her characters to life on-screen but also compose songs for them is nothing short of extraordinary.
At the first screening of “When Up the Hill” on Thursday evening, Tiff attendees were in for a delightful surprise as the movie’s lead actress, Vicky Krieps, graced them with a live performance of the film’s closing song.
Carol Krieps penned the tune, “Jill,” personally, as it was influenced by the character she portrays in the New Zealand-born psychological ghost story directed by Samuel Van Grinsven. In this movie, Krieps embodies a sorrowful widow who has just lost her spouse. During the funeral, she encounters her late partner’s troubled son, Jack (well-known from “Stranger Things” with Dacre Montgomery). As the story unfolds, the spirit of Jack’s mother reappears and takes control of both characters, using them as vessels to communicate with each other and foster a bond between them. However, this spiritual connection brings about perilous consequences.
Bankside Films is marketing the movie titled “Went Up the Hill” globally, sharing the responsibility for North American distribution rights with CAA Media Finance.
As a gamer, I’ve always crafted a melody for each character I embody, but it was unprecedented when I was requested to include that tune within the film itself.
In the past, I found my songs were purely introspective. I’d compose them during filmmaking and sing them privately as a way for me to release the feelings that accumulated while embodying characters. During the making of “Phantom Thread” by Paul Thomas Anderson, when I had young children at home, I needed an immediate outlet to disconnect from the role so I could resume normal life. So, I employed this technique to help me do just that.
In collaboration with New Zealand musician Mark Perkins (also known as Merk), Krieps has put together an album featuring all of her original songs, each one titled after a character from one of her films. On Thursday evening at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre, Perkins played the guitar while Krieps made her live debut performance.
As the artist myself, I’ve completed recording our album, and though I have plans to release it, I’m undecided about the specifics. Perhaps a label will be involved, but the details are yet to be finalized.
