Reflecting upon my days on the set of Mission Kashmir, I can’t help but chuckle at the memory of my altercation with the formidable Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Here was this legendary filmmaker, renowned for his masterpieces like Parinda and 1942: A Love Story, and little ol’ me—a feisty actress from Mumbai trying to navigate the freezing cold temperatures of Srinagar while battling a fever.
During the production of Mission Kashmir (2000), an unforeseen altercation took place between Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Sonali Kulkarni. While collaborating with Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, and Preity Zinta, the actress found herself idling on set for two days without any scenes to shoot. Aggravated by this, she expressed her discontent to Vidhu, which ignited a heated disagreement. However, the filmmaker later admitted to her illness and made sure she received proper care before filming her scenes.
During a chat with Siddharth Kannan, Sonali Kulkarni reminisced about her collaboration with Vidhu Vinod Chopra during the filming of Mission Kashmir. She brought up a memorable instance where he sternly reprimanded her on the movie set.
In October, they stayed at the Nehru guesthouse in Srinagar, enduring cold weather, as Sonali came down with a high temperature. However, despite her illness, no scenes were filmed with her for two consecutive days.
The actress shared that one occasion, he loudly scolded her. This happened while filming in Srinagar during October. While there, we resided at the Nehru guest house, which was freezing cold at the time, and I even fell ill with a fever. For two consecutive days, no scenes were filmed featuring me.
Disappointed, Sonali Kulkarni expressed her worries to Vidhu about returning, leading to a disagreement when he challenged her mental state and she insisted on knowing when her filming sequences would take place at last.
She said, “He was like, ‘Tu pagal hai? You think I will let you return from here?’ I also yelled back, ‘So, when are you going to shoot my scenes?’”
Additionally, she admitted that during the intense conversation, she didn’t fully realize that she was conversing with a well-known filmmaker like Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Instead, her thoughts were solely centered on practical concerns—if her scenes hadn’t been scheduled yet, she felt it would be reasonable to allow her to depart and return when they were prepared for filming.
Sonali Kulkarni didn’t worry much about specifics such as ticket prices or technical aspects of production; instead, she focused primarily on maximizing the effective use of time.
During Mission Kashmir, she remembered asserting herself against the director when he disregarded her worries, labeling her as ‘crazy.’ Unfazed, she retorted with conviction, “I’m not crazy. I have memorized my lines and understand my character.
Her strong posture made him understand she wasn’t feeling good, so he arranged for her care. Not long after, she filmed her part. She stated, “Upon hearing this, Vidhu contacted someone and said, ‘Give her something to eat; she has a fever.’ Later on, I performed my scene.
