As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for the intricacies of Bollywood, I find the story of Vikram Bhatt and Aamir Khan’s collaboration in Ghulam fascinating. Having been part of the industry for decades, I’ve seen many tales of success, failure, and missed opportunities.
1998’s movie Ghulam, directed by Vikram Bhatt and starring Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji, was a hit at the box office. Interestingly, it was Vikram’s third project with Aamir, but their collaboration ended after Ghulam. In a recent conversation, Vikram explained the reason for this and stated that he can’t continually wait for an actor’s approval. Additionally, Vikram shared the story of how he managed to secure Ghulam.
During an interview with News18 Showsha, Vikram Bhatt discussed the possibility of working with Aamir Khan again. However, by that point in time, Bhatt had taken a different creative path. He mentioned projects like Kasoor, Raaz, and Awara Paagal Deewana, while Aamir was on a break following Lagaan.
Vikram shared that he wasn’t inclined to invest numerous years of his life into a movie, given Aamir’s reputation for dedicating significant time to his projects, often committing years even before the filming starts.
Additionally, I’m not the type of director who can repeatedly pause production for an actor’s approval, regardless of who they are, as I’m quite eager to start filming. Consequently, such opportunities didn’t present themselves a second time. This was his statement.
Concerning Ghulam, Vikram mentioned that securing the role wasn’t simple. He went on to explain that Ghulam was an intricate tale. He initially collaborated with Aamir during Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin and later in Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. Following these projects, he was given a chance in his brother’s film, Madhosh. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t receive favorable responses.
Vikram originally intended to act in Ghulam before Mahesh Bhatt, but that didn’t happen. His debut film, Jaanam, failed, causing Mukesh to dismiss him from the company, and thus, Ghulam was no longer his project.
Ultimately, Vikram Bhatt took over directing duties as Mahesh Bhatt chose to step aside from the project. In an interview, the director explained that he resumed working with them and directed “Fareb”, which turned out to be a success. At some point, it was decided that Mahesh Bhatt would no longer confine himself to only directing movies like “Ghulam”.
In conclusion, he mentioned that the matter didn’t hold much significance for him. However, Aamir required an extremely dedicated individual, and this is how Ghulam eventually joined forces with Vikram.
Meanwhile, Ghulam also starred Sharat Saxena, Deepak Tijori, and others in pivotal roles.
