As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of industry ups and downs. The latest news about Village Roadshow being behind on payments to its writers has caught my attention.
The Writers Guild of America is considering instructing its members to refrain from collaborating with Village Roadshow due to allegations that the company has fallen behind in making payments to its writers.
A WGA representative has stated that the organization will soon issue a halt on work due to non-payment of writers, as they are late with their payments. Village Roadshow, known for producing films like the Ocean’s series, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Lego Movie, chose not to comment on this matter. The initial report of this potential action by the WGA was made by Variety.
In recent times, as Hollywood undergoes a period of contraction, Village Roadshow has been streamlining expenses. Not long ago, they carried out a series of layoffs that impacted positions in business affairs, administration, and film and television sectors. During this time, the company was exploring various strategic options such as welcoming additional investors. Since 2017, Vine Alternative Investments has held a significant stake in Village Roadshow, owning the majority control.
In 2021, Village Roadshow Entertainment Group signed a preliminary production agreement with Kevin Garnett’s Content Cartel studio. They also revealed several intriguing projects such as an adaptation of Pam Grier’s memoir titled “Foxy: My Life in Three Acts”, a scripted series inspired by the University of Idaho murders, and a docuseries delving into the life story of Jimmy Hoffa, former Teamsters union leader.
Ever since our tussle with Warner Bros. over the day-and-date release of “The Matrix Resurrections” in 2021, leading to an ongoing arbitration, we’ve found ourselves absent from collaborative projects with them. They seem to have excluded us from significant financial opportunities related to sequels and remakes like “Sherlock Holmes” and “Ready Player One”. As a gamer, I can only hope for a smoother partnership in the future.
