As a die-hard action enthusiast, I can’t help but feel the adrenaline rush that Vin Diesel embodies, living his life at breakneck speed, much like Dominic Toretto. However, Diesel hasn’t limited this exhilaration to just the Fast and Furious universe; he’s also elevated the action, explosions, and mayhem in his critically debated franchise, xXx (also known as Triple X). If you’re intrigued by Diesel pushing the limits without his cherished family by his side, you’re in for a treat! Fortunately, both the original xXx movie and its sequel, which seems to fall short even without Diesel, are now available for free streaming.
First Released in 2002, during a time when only one Fast and Furious movie had been made instead of multiple ones, xXx was directed by Rob Cohen and stars Vin Diesel as Xander Cage, a bold, bald-headed thrill-seeker constantly chasing the next adrenaline rush. This chance arises thanks to Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Augustus Gibbons, a high-ranking National Security Agency official, who extends an unconventional spy offer to Cage. Starting April 1, xXx will be available on a free streaming platform. Here is the official synopsis for your perusal.
In this rephrased version, Vin Diesel portrays Xander “XXX” Cage, a renowned ex-extreme sports star known for his death-defying feats in public. Given the belief that he can accomplish what traditional spies have not, Cage is brought on board by NSA Agent Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) for an unconventional undercover role. Assigned to a perilous secret operation, he must employ all his extreme talents to take down a cunning, organized, and relentless adversary operating far beyond his realm of expertise.
The movie titled “xXx” faced mixed reactions when it first came out, earning 48% from critics and 58% from viewers as ratings. Although Vin Diesel’s charisma and physique were appealing, the film failed to significantly refresh the spy genre as intended. However, it managed to generate an impressive global revenue of $277 million, surpassing its production budget of $88 million.
Ice Cube Takes Over the Franchise In ‘xXx: State of the Union’
Despite negative feedback, work began swiftly on a follow-up film, with Vin Diesel’s character reportedly deceased following the storyline of the first movie in Bora Bora. In his stead, Ice Cube steps into the role, becoming the newest ex-con recruit for Gibbons’ spy team. This is necessary due to the NSA apparently being compromised, and a dangerous terrorist organization posing a threat.
As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that I recently dove into the world of Darius Stone, the latest character to step into the shoes left by Xander Cage, made famous by Diesel. Much like his predecessor’s moniker, Darius’ name is as extravagant as it gets. Unfortunately, Ice Cube’s action-packed venture, “State of the Union,” was met with even harsher criticism than its forerunner. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a paltry 17% rating, while audiences were slightly more lenient, scoring it at 32%. The critics’ consensus reads: “More absurd and implausible than the first XXX movie, State of the Union is less inspired and technically competent than its predecessor.”
However, if you’re in the mood for a mindless action movie double-feature, mark your calendars – “State of the Union” is set to debut on Tubi starting April 1. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and let the adrenaline rush take over!
Initially, both Vin Diesel and director Rob Cohen expressed interest in reprising their roles for the second xXx film, but they ultimately decided against it due to problems with the script. Nevertheless, Diesel took on the character of Xander Cage once more in 2017’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage. Given the mixed reviews for the third installment, one might wonder if he should have let the character rest in peace instead.
