The American Film Institute has chosen two well-respected figures in the Hollywood industry, Viola Davis and Walter Murch, to bestow with an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree during their conservatory graduation ceremony. This event is set to occur at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on August 8th. Both Davis and Murch have been confirmed to receive this prestigious award.
Bob Gazzale, AFI’s president and CEO, highly commended Viola Davis and Walter Murch, two exceptional artists in their fields. He expressed that they embody the level of greatness AFI was established to honor. Their impact on the art of filmmaking has moved viewers globally, just as they will inspire this year’s graduates from the AFI Conservatory.
I’ve earned the honor of joining an esteemed lineup of artists who have received AFI honors before me – names like Robert Altman, Maya Angelou, Saul Bass, Angela Bassett, Kathryn Bigelow, Mel Brooks, Carol Burnett, Anne V. Coates, Jamie Lee Curtis, Clint Eastwood, Roger Ebert, Nora Ephron, Jodie Foster, Lesli Linka Glatter, James Earl Jones, Lawrence Kasdan, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Kathleen Kennedy, Angela Lansbury, Spike Lee, David Lynch, Helen Mirren, Rita Moreno, Quentin Tarantino, Lily Tomlin, Robert Towne, Cicely Tyson, Haskell Wexler, John Williams, and Michelle Yeoh. As a gamer, it’s humbling to be mentioned alongside these legends in the world of entertainment.
Davis, who attained EGOT status, graduated from the Juilliard School and was awarded an honorary doctorate during its 109th graduation ceremony. She also received one from her other alma mater, Rhode Island College. As a co-founder of JuVee Productions (alongside her husband Julius Tennon), she’s currently riding the wave following the release of G20, which was distributed by Amazon MGM Studios.
Murch, an editor and sound designer who has won an Academy Award, started off editing sounds for Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Rain People” in 1969. Born and raised in New York, he received his first Oscar nomination in 1974 for the film “The Conversation,” and eventually won an award a few years later, in 1979, for his work on Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now.
Murch continued to work with esteemed directors like George Lucas, Fred Zinnemann, Philip Kaufman, Anthony Minghella, Kathryn Bigelow, Sam Mendes, and Brad Bird. He accomplished an extremely unusual feat when he was awarded two Oscars for best sound and best film editing for his contribution to Minghella’s film The English Patient. Among his other notable works are THX 1138, the Godfather trilogy, American Graffiti, Return to Oz, Tomorrowland, Jarhead, Cold Mountain, K-19: The Widowmaker, The Talented Mr. Ripley, First Knight, I Love Trouble, Romeo is Bleeding, Ghost, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Julia, and many more.
