As a dedicated gamer and action movie enthusiast, I couldn’t be more thrilled to hear that David Harbour’s badass Santa Claus is set to return for another holiday-themed adventure in “Violent Night 2”! The first film was an instant hit, combining the classic Christmas spirit with adrenaline-pumping action and a healthy dose of nostalgia. I’ve always been a fan of the ’80s and ’90s action films that inspired this modern take on St. Nick, so the idea of exploring Santa’s backstory as a Norse warrior and expanding upon the universe is beyond exciting.
I’m thrilled to share that David Harbour’s Santa Claus is making a comeback! I recently joined SYFY WIRE for a chat over Zoom about the exciting new Christmas action movie, which you can now stream on Peacock. In our conversation, director Tommy Wirkola dropped some lovely news – a sequel to the smash hit “Violent Night” is underway. Co-writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller have already penned down another delightful screenplay for us to enjoy!
I’m thrilled about the potential new ideas we’re exploring. The early stages of this project are underway, and I’m optimistic that Pat and Josh will soon begin writing the script. It’s an exciting time for us all, as the first film was a success and the audience seemed to enjoy it. Personally, I can’t wait to see where we go with this story next.
Drawing inspiration from iconic ’80s action movies such as “Die Hard,” in “Violent Night,” Harbour portrays a rough-and-tumble Kris Kringle. Facing off against a band of mercenaries intent on raiding a secure family estate on Christmas Eve, this Santa Claus is far from the jolly figure we know. The film, with a global box office revenue of $76 million, subtly suggests a more expansive backstory for this unique Santa. Initially, he was a Norse warrior with a violent past, who later discovered a mystical bag filled with presents.
If you’ve watched “Violent Night” to the end, let’s discuss this entertaining take on “Home Alone” with a violent twist.
Violent Night Director Tommy Wirkola Teases Potential Ideas for Sequel
“I’m holding back on sharing too many details since we’re still in the early stages and things could shift as we haven’t begun writing the script,” cautioned director Wirkola. “However, we didn’t visit the North Pole, meet the elves or encounter Mrs. Claus in the previous film. We aim to broaden the scope a bit – not excessively – by exploring new locations and developing the characters further while maintaining our signature humor.”
The filmmaker shared that although they can’t reveal much about the potential plot of the next “Violent Night” installment, they are committed to exploring Santa’s past as a powerful Viking warrior with a hammer. They filmed some scenes for this in the current production but decided not to explain it all here. Instead, they plan to save the revelation for a possible sequel, expressing hope that they will be given the chance to bring it to life on screen then.
Wirkola suggested that elements from “Die Hard with a Vengeance” could influence the second “Violent Night” film. He mentioned, “There are parts of it we really enjoy.” This hints at a possibility that a character related to Mr. Scrooge (John Leguizamo) may seek revenge in the North Pole setting for the upcoming movie.
He explained that this film draws inspiration from beloved Christmas movies of our childhood, as well as the action films popular in the ’80s and ’90s. Our story aims to honor various elements from different movies, while maintaining its unique identity. We plan to incorporate influences from classics like “Home Alone” and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” keeping true to the enjoyment of these nostalgic pieces.
When Will Violent Night 2 Be Released?
Universal Pictures hasn’t set a definite release date for the sequel as of now. However, producer Kelly McCormick, co-founder of action production company 87North with her husband David Leitch, shared some exciting news about the upcoming project in an interview with Collider earlier this year.
I’m thrilled to share that we’re making plans to revisit the universes of “Violent Night” and “Nobody.” Fingers crossed, we might see “Nobody 2” towards the end of this year, while “Violent Night 2” could be a reality by the beginning of next year. It all depends on everyone’s schedules permitting. Development is progressing wonderfully, and there’s an infectious excitement among us all about expanding these stories further.
