Vivek Oberoi recalls going door-to-door to sell perfumes during school days: ‘I made mistakes…’

As I reflect on the extraordinary journey of Vivek Oberoi, I am struck by his indomitable spirit and unwavering determination. From selling perfumes door-to-door at the tender age of 10 to launching a successful tech startup by 22, it’s clear that this man is not just an accomplished actor but also a seasoned entrepreneur.

Vivek Oberoi, who often discusses the hurdles he’s encountered in his personal life and acting career, just reminisced about his childhood when he used to sell perfumes door-to-door during school hours. He stated, “When I was around ten years old, my father informed me that we would go on a vacation within a month, but prior to that, he wanted to teach me something over the following four weeks.” Later, he continued, “I made mistakes, but I also learned a great deal from the experience.

During a conversation with Entertainment Live, Vivek Oberoi discussed how his upbringing played a significant role in his entrepreneurial mindset, attributing much of it to his father, Suresh Oberoi. At the tender age of 10, he was assigned a task to monitor the stock of perfumes that his father bought. He was encouraged to jot down relevant details in a diary and could even pocket any profits made from selling items priced higher than their set value. This hands-on experience gave him a solid understanding of key business aspects like accounting, sales, and more at an early stage in life.

10-year-old Vivek Oberoi started selling perfumes by visiting houses on his bicycle, using it to carry his school bag full of products. He explained, “I would go from house to house on my bike, carrying a school bag filled with inventory and merchandise.” Despite facing obstacles and making mistakes, he learned valuable skills and continued this venture every year.

He added that by 15, he started coming up with his own business ideas and entered the stock market. At 19, he launched a tech startup, which he successfully sold by the age of 22. He said, “That’s when I realised it was possible to establish a company, sell it to an MNC and help both investors and myself earn money.”

Vivek explained that discovering this success sparked an idea for him to establish a business, eventually selling it to a large corporation and earning profits not only for himself but also for his investors. He additionally discussed how his entrepreneurial endeavors equipped him with the courage to tackle obstacles in his acting profession, empowering him to pursue fresh ventures autonomously. This phase represented a pivotal moment in his life journey.

He emphasized, “There should be no mistake in hard work from my side. We have to give 100 percent. When we do that, the result would mostly be good: be it in films, business, philanthropy or love. Sometimes you get tired because of the workload. But when the team and people are so good, you join forces, contribute and they understand the vision.”

Vivek Oberoi first appeared on the big screen in the action-thriller “Company,” directed by Ram Gopal Varma, alongside a powerful cast including Ajay Devgn, Manisha Koirala, Mohanlal, and Antara Mali. Since then, he’s expanded his repertoire with an array of films like “Road,” “Saathiya,” “Dum,” “Masti,” “Yuva,” “Shootout at Lokhandwala,” “Rakhta Charitra 1,” “Rakht Charitra 2,” and “Krrish 3.” Most recently, he was featured in Rohit Shetty’s web series “Indian Police Force” alongside Shilpa Shetty and Sidharth Malhotra.

In 2010, I was fortunate to tie the knot with Priyanka, who is the beloved daughter of the late Jeevaraj Alva, a distinguished former Karnataka minister, and the acclaimed dancer Nandini. Together, we have been blessed with two beautiful children: our daughter, Ameya Nirvana, and our son, Vivaan Veer.
