Jenna Davis is having quite the week.
Beyond her debut country album release titled “Where Did That Girl Go?“, the versatile performer and digital influencer is additionally commemorating this weekend’s premiere of M3GAN 2.0, the eagerly-awaited follow-up to last year’s successful sci-fi/horror film, M3GAN. (Secure your tickets here!)
In the next installment, Davis resumes voicing the destructive robot, and Amie Donald performs the character’s actions again. Interestingly, the filmmaking approach differed from the first time, as Davis explained in a Zoom conversation with SYFY WIRE. Unlike before where she recorded her lines after the footage was shot, this time Davis started working on her dialogue prior to any frames being filmed.

Davis shared that during filming, the actors could listen to his voice as a guide. However, since lines and scenes can alter, he was involved throughout the entire process. This time around, he got to contribute before filming began, which gave him a clearer understanding of the project’s progression. It was an enjoyable experience for him.
2 years after the original, the story of M3GAN 2.0 unfolds as the titular doll is resurrected to confront a fresh, mechanical menace named AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno). This new adversary infuses the narrative with echoes of Terminator 2. As M3GAN encounters an entity even more sinister than herself, she stands at a pivotal moment: save humanity or assert her superiority as an intelligent artificial being. Despite her rapid evolution, she’s transforming into something unique – a peculiar blend of human and machine. Davis offers insights into the character’s development in this interview.
Jenna Davis, the voice of M3GAN, takes us inside M3GAN 2.0

When did you know the first movie had become a big hit?
Jenna Davis stated: Our debut weekend was fantastic, and it left me feeling quite excited and optimistic. However, after the opening weekend, everything was beyond our control and relied on everyone who wished to watch the movie. As an actress, I always approach it as, “Well, I’ve done my part. I adore this film. I hope everyone else enjoys it.” That’s the attitude I take. But it wasn’t until after the first weekend that I realized, “Wow, people are truly enjoying it!” It was both anticipated and unforeseen how much affection the movie would receive.
How long after M3GAN‘s success did it take for sequel talk to come onto your radar?
Initially, it was clear our renewal happened swiftly and decisively, yet I chose to remain cautious about speculations until I received personal confirmation. Given the cliffhanger ending of the first film, where the small light illuminated, numerous possibilities existed for the plot’s evolution. It seemed they reached out not long after the announcement was made public. Once informed, I felt reassured. The sequel, while maintaining some similarities to the original, has certainly deviated from what many might have anticipated in terms of its storyline.
How did Gerard sell the sequel to you?
In the script he provided, I was able to review it initially. Following our conversation, he emphasized the significance of portraying M3GAN in a fresh perspective for this movie. He wanted to retain the charm that made her so popular in the initial film, but also introduce empathy and complex dimensions to M3GAN, which was both enjoyable and demanding given she’s a robot. Artificial Intelligence is always developing, mirroring M3GAN’s continuous evolution. We aimed to acknowledge this aspect of AI while depicting its progression through M3GAN, all while preserving the elements that resonated, experimenting with her tones, emotions, and interactions with other characters, which differ slightly from the first film. If you observe, there is a greater emphasis on action scenes in this movie. There’s also more campiness, but we also reveal a more serious side of M3GAN, a softer side that was less prominent in the initial film.
How would you describe Gerard’s directing style?
I greatly admire Gerard immensely due to his exceptional ability as a director to clearly articulate and stick to his creative vision for the project. Unlike some directors who might ask for input, Gerard is both collaborative and determined about the direction he wants for M3GAN. His clarity and open communication allow me, as an actor, to deliver what he envisions, making it a pleasant and invigorating experience. Furthermore, Gerard ensures that the performance feels authentic to me, considering it’s my own interpretation he’s seeking.
In your previous statement, you hinted at M3GAN showing a gentler aspect in the new installment. Could you clarify how you brought a touch of human-like qualities to this character?
As a devotee, I find myself treading a delicate balance. On one hand, it’s undeniable that she’s an advanced AI; yet, I yearn for others to acknowledge this truth. However, as we delve deeper into the realm of A.I., these entities grow increasingly sophisticated, learning, processing, and adapting at astonishing rates. In my quest to infuse her with a touch of humanity, I’ve allowed her to absorb more information, making her interactions feel more human-like and empathetic.
Interestingly, she was programmed to safeguard Cady, which makes me ponder whether the affection and care she displays towards Cady is merely a result of programming or if it has evolved into something more organic over time. Strangely enough, this artificial being doesn’t always extend that same warmth towards Gemma, leaving me to wonder about the complexities of her feelings and programming.
Do you have a favorite line or scene from the sequel?
As a fan, one moment that truly stands out to me is when [M3GAN] breaks into song in Gemma’s presence. It beautifully illustrates the unique bond between them, a bond that carries a sweetness that is truly heartwarming. Another scene I adore is when M3GAN enters Cady’s bedroom, appearing as a WALL-E-like robot. This sentimental moment showcases a more tender side of M3GAN, offering a refreshing change from her usual demeanor. Yet, it doesn’t take long for her to revert back to her quirky and unsettling ways, adding another layer to her character that I find captivating.
That singing scene got the biggest laugh at my screening. What went into the performance?
For the initial movie, we went with “Titanium” and “Tell Me Your Dreams,” which were great, but her singing style had a more playful, almost Sesame Street quality. However, in the second film, they made M3GAN’s singing voice sound more mature and like she was truly performing a song cover. Her vocals improved significantly in this movie. In the first production, I was instructed to sing poorly on purpose, but for this film, they said, “Let’s have M3GAN hit some of the notes and make her sound good.” As a singer, it felt like a huge relief and joy!
However, finding it enjoyable was no surprise. This element was simply another aspect of M3GAN’s evolution, enhancing her character in various aspects throughout her development. Additionally, this song seemed exceptionally fitting for that particular scene. Furthermore, she had an extended singing sequence in this movie, which I particularly enjoyed. My favorite part? The way they synchronized her hand movements to the rhythm, creating a mini-musical with her small gestures like grabs and pushes. It was quite amusing and entertaining. I’m pleased it’s eliciting laughter. That was intentional.
What song was it? I didn’t catch it in the end credits…
“This Woman’s Work” by Kate Bush.
Between this and Stranger Things, Kate Bush is really having a moment…
As a gamer, let me say, I’m completely captivated by her right now. She’s got this unique charm that’s just… iconic! If only I could catch her reaction to the thrilling M3GAN 2.0 scene on video. That would be something extraordinary!
In addition to acting, you’re also a country music artist. What’s the latest on that front?
Originally from Texas, I’ve just released my first album titled “Where Did That Girl Go“. Turning 21 on May 5th, I find myself in an unusual phase, straddling adolescence and adulthood. Although people are telling me I’m becoming a woman, the idea terrifies me. I still feel like a girl, asking, “Where did that girl go?” The album is about my journey into maturity while sharing my personal stories. Each song conveys a distinct emotion, mirroring an actress’s ability to portray different roles. I believe music has the power to express what words cannot. Therefore, each track on the album resonates with any emotion a person might be experiencing, aiming to connect with listeners on a deeper level. That’s the essence of my project.

As a devoted fan, I was left spellbound when M3GAN unveiled her secret backup at the climax, implying that she hadn’t truly perished during the confrontation with Amelia. If given the chance, I’d love to explore where this character might be heading in a potential third installment. Where would you imagine M3GAN’s story progress next?
In our story, we’ve been blending genres a bit, moving from horror to more action with a hint of horror still present. If there’s a third installment, it could be exciting to reintroduce some terror. At the same time, I’d enjoy exploring M3GAN’s character development by introducing a love interest, which could bring humor and new emotions for her. This idea is quite intriguing. During the premiere, someone asked me who M3GAN might be romantically interested in, and I replied that no robot has yet reached her caliber. So, it would be fascinating to see another robot rise up to challenge her and witness how she reacts.
Any memorable interactions with the other cast members?
As a gamer, my role was primarily in the recording booth, away from the film set itself. My voice recordings were used on set instead. Being physically absent from the set presents its own difficulties since I lack face-to-face interaction and must visualize myself within the scene to ensure authenticity and believability. No specific set memory stands out as I wasn’t there, but what I can share is that my favorite aspect of studio recording was collaborating with different sound engineers. These sessions often involved me and Gerard on a Zoom call or him being in the room. It was amusing because when we worked with new engineers, they were taken aback by how quickly I could slip into her voice. Some would even comment, “Whoa! Okay, I need a moment. That was kind of scary.” It’s thrilling to spook sound engineers and bring laughter to the room. There were instances where I delivered a line, and Gerard and the engineer would chuckle, but they had to be mindful not to laugh too loudly, lest the microphone picked it up.
The movie engages with the ongoing debate about the rapid growth of AI in our daily routines, especially within the entertainment industry. Given your artistic background, what message do you believe the sequel intends to convey?
As a gamer, I find this movie intriguing as it explores both the advantages and pitfalls of AI. Previously, I saw films focusing on scenarios where AI might seize control. This film, however, presents an engaging question: can we establish a harmonious, balanced relationship with AI that doesn’t lead to its domination? The movie reflects our current world where AI seems to be increasingly present and not vanishing anytime soon. So, it’s crucial for us to learn how to collaborate effectively with AI, creating a partnership rather than competing or trying to overpower each other.
