For several years, Hollywood has been endeavoring to create a successful Voltron movie, and it seems that effort may finally bear fruit. Recently, filming concluded on Amazon’s live-action version of the iconic ’80s TV series. Notable actors such as Henry Cavill, Sterling K. Brown, and even Rita Ora are involved in this project. The director responsible for films like Red Notice and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story has been enlisted to lead the new interpretation of the cherished animated show. As fans eagerly await a release date and plot specifics, here’s what we know so far about the movie and potential implications for the final product.
The Cast Has Already Assembled
Information about the live-action Voltron film isn’t extensive yet, however, an official cast list has been revealed. The principal actors enlisted are:
1. This version simplifies the sentence by breaking it down into two parts and rephrasing for clarity.
2. It also uses easy-to-understand language to convey the information effectively.
- Henry Cavill
- Sterling K. Brown
- Rita Ora
- Tim Griffin
- John Harlan Kim
- Alba Baptista
- Laura Gordon
- Nathan Jones
- Samson Kayo
- Daniel Quinn Toye
It’s still uncertain which characters each actor is assigned to, but it appears that five actors are set to portray the pilots operating Voltron. Given their prominence in the film, Henry Cavill, Sterling K. Brown, and Rita Ora seem like strong contenders for those roles. As we await a trailer, viewers will have to guess who takes on which character.
The positive aspect is that it appears the cast list for the movie won’t undergo major changes. In an Instagram post, the film’s producer, Bob Koplar, announced that the live-action Voltron movie has completed production. The shooting for this project concluded in April, and given the swift pace of post-production, it seems the movie might be out by the end of the year, although no official release dates have been disclosed yet. Fans may need to wait longer than anticipated due to this lack of information. The film is being distributed by Amazon MGM Studios, and there are whispers that the distributor may decide to premiere the movie directly on Amazon Prime Video rather than in theaters as originally planned.
The Netflix series Voltron was overseen by director Rawson Marshall Thurber, who is known for his work in both comedy and action genres. Some of his notable comedies include Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and We’re the Millers. More recently, he has ventured into action films like Red Notice. His ability to combine humor and action makes him a fitting choice for this project.
New Pilots May Fight Old Foes
Given how much is unknown about Voltron, it’s not unexpected that details about the plot are being kept under wraps. In a video message, Rawson Marshall Thurber hinted to viewers, “In this movie, we will introduce a completely fresh crew of pilots.” Although the main characters may change, the director emphasized his intention to preserve the essence of the original series. Moreover, Thurber’s statement didn’t dismiss the idea that characters from the original show might make an appearance to help and guide these new pilots.
In the upcoming film, we can expect Lion Voltron, the initial mechanical lion composition, to be a significant focus. Subsequent seasons introduced various Voltron models capable of functioning in air, water, and land. Other mech models might make an appearance in the movie, but it seems unlikely that a Voltron film could proceed without Lion Voltron as a central element. The plot details hinted at by director Rawson Marshall Thurber suggest that our adversaries will likely be Prince Lotor and King Zarkon, the antagonists from the original series who wreak havoc on Earth with their robotic creations. These characters, reminiscent of ’80s alien fascination, may undergo a refresh to fit modern sensibilities.
Imagine a New ‘Pacific Rim’ or ‘Speed Racer’
In essence, a live-action Voltron film might resemble the aesthetic of Pacific Rim, as it showcases humans controlling colossal robots in an effort to protect Earth from invading monsters. While both stories share similarities, the core concept of Voltron lies in its robots combining to form a larger robot, unlike Pacific Rim. The upcoming Voltron movie is anticipated to include more space combat and robot-versus-robot action. Nonetheless, it’s reasonable to expect that elements reminiscent of Pacific Rim will be present in the Voltron film.
In essence, just as Voltron shares similar origins with other anime series turned live-action films like Speed Racer, both of these shows were initially Japanese animations that were bought and dubbed for American audiences. Later on, Speed Racer was reimagined into a live-action film in 2008. Despite receiving mixed reviews upon its release, Speed Racer has since developed a dedicated fanbase who appreciate its innovative adaptation of the series and visually captivating style. The enduring appeal of Speed Racer suggests that Voltron could also find success with modern audiences.
As the original audience of the show has grown older, there’s a possibility that the film version could adopt a more serious or darker tone compared to its source material. For instance, the live-action Transformers movies were significantly darker than the ’80s cartoons. Given the success of the Transformers films, it wouldn’t be unexpected if the Voltron movie follows a similar path. However, with Rawson Marshall Thurber at the helm, there’s a stronger chance that Voltron will maintain a more playful and comedic approach, reminiscent of the original series. Fingers crossed it doesn’t turn out like the 2017 Power Rangers adaptation, which was notably dark and gritty.
