Contains spoilers for “Superman”
After the tremendous achievement of James Gunn’s “Superman,” efforts to establish a strong DC Universe in cinemas will carry on next year with “Supergirl.” For comprehensive insights into Kara Zor-El’s return to the big screen, check out our detailed recap video linked above. With its potential to significantly influence the future of superhero films, “Supergirl” is definitely a must-watch for anyone keen on this genre.
In a previous scene towards the end of “Superman,” we had our initial sneak peek at the newly introduced DC Universe’s Supergirl, portrayed by Milly Alcock from “House of the Dragon.” In an unexpected turn of events, a somewhat inebriated Supergirl storms into the Fortress of Solitude to retrieve her dog Krypto from her cousin Kal-El, also known as Superman (David Corenswet), who has been looking after him. This brief, lively scene serves as a setup for the upcoming “Supergirl” film. Furthermore, director James Gunn hinted that the DCU’s portrayal of Kara will be quite disorganized due to her distinct backstory.
As a gamer, I can say that Superman had an amazing upbringing with parents who adored him and were incredibly healthy. On the other hand, Supergirl’s background was nothing like that. While we’re still waiting for clarification from Supergirl about what Gunn meant, Kara’s wild party-girl persona has some roots in the comics. In fact, this comic book history might give us a clue as to where in the DC Universe timeline “Supergirl” is set.
We may have already seen the story of the Supergirl movie in motion
The upcoming movie titled “Supergirl” is being helmed by Craig Gillespie, a director known for creating popular films centered around complex female characters, as shown in his works like “I, Tonya” and “Cruella.” The script is penned by Ana Nogueira. The film is largely inspired by the eight-issue miniseries “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” written by Tom King with illustrations by Bilquis Evely. In this storyline, Kara Zor-El interacts with Ruthye Marye Knoll (played by Eve Ridley), an extraterrestrial girl who persuades Kara to join her mission for vengeance against Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoeanerts) who is responsible for her father’s demise.
If Milly Alcock’s initial performance as Kara in “Woman of Tomorrow” is any clue, the events depicted might occur around the same timeframe as “Superman.” In this story, Kara encounters Ruthye after a night of drinking at a tavern, far from Earth. Since our sun makes drunkenness impossible for Kryptonians, this setting is necessary. Interestingly, Kara in this tale is wearing the same beige coat as Alcock’s Kara in “Superman,” and she has Krypto with her. This could imply that Kara may meet Ruthye either just before or right after her Earth visit to collect Krypto in “Supergirl.” Alternatively, it might suggest that Kara has an unusually high tolerance for alcohol!
Regardless of the situation, it seems clear that “Supergirl” will continue to delve deeply into Kara’s sensitive side, a trait that made “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” one of the most exceptional “Supergirl” stories yet. Moreover, it will also emphasize heroism as a challenging, relentless struggle – a development that undoubtedly looks promising. Make sure to check out our video recap as we eagerly await the return of “Supergirl” on June 26, 2026.
