As a long-time Warframe player with thousands of hours under my belt, I have seen the game evolve and expand in ways that kept me hooked for years. But when Digital Extremes announced Warframe 1999, my excitement was through the roof!
When you’ve already added a lot to make your successful free-to-play action RPG, Warframe by Digital Extremes, even better, what’s next? This is the challenge they face.
In a shift towards cosmic horror around 2023, Whispers in the Walls introduced intriguing new elements, including expansive open-world regions, ship battles, and fishing. Looking for a resolution? Travel back to the year 1999 using some cleverly placed narrative time warps.
Back to where it began
As a gamer, I’ve heard Digital Extremes mention that in order to play Warframe 1999, having a solid understanding of its campaign is essential. However, they were somewhat evasive when discussing potential solutions for newcomers looking to get up to speed more quickly.
I used to be an avid Warfare player back in the day, but I’ve taken a break for a while. Now, I can’t get enough of 1999 – it’s like Warframe meets early superhero movies, set in the grungy and ominous year 2000. I’m the leader of this team of Tenno progenitors, and I’m played by none other than Ben Starr from Final Fantasy 16. It’s an exciting fusion of old-school shooting action and superhero storytelling that leaves me craving more each time I play.
In a raw and fitting manner for this setting, his rough voice complements each of his powersome teammates. They exchange sharp words, engage in disagreements, and occasionally display deep disdain towards one another. The tight costumes only intensified the X-Men comparison that came naturally to me.
An additional feature is the implementation of a social system using an old-school instant messaging platform. Furthermore, the voice cast, which was previously announced, consists of actors from Baldur’s Gate 3, Super Mario Bros. Wonders, and Cyberpunk 2077.
As a gamer in the year 1999, I can’t wait to experience the authentic feel of this era. We’ll have infomercials for movie rental services popping up between levels, reminding us of the good old days. And keep your eyes peeled for some sneaky nods to gaming history, like a shocking cameo from none other than Gordon Freeman, presented as a cardboard cutout in one of the game’s scenes. But here’s what really gets me excited: an in-game boyband that’s about to drop its first single on streaming services – tomorrow, July 20! I’ve already heard a sneak peek, and trust me, it’s going to be stuck in your head long after you’ve put down the controller.
Regarding the music previewed at TennoCon before the expansion, the Digital Extremes team revealed that they composed new tunes specifically for this release. The range of genres encompasses everything from sweet boyband pop to heavy, grinding post-hardcore and grunge music.
Slicin’ and bikin’
From a fan’s perspective, I’m thrilled about the new addition of using Arthur in the game. He bears a strong resemblance to the iconic Excalibur frame, who would have guessed with that name? The gameplay experience is enhanced not only by the altered audio and visuals but also by his controls. As a Warframe player, I’m accustomed to maneuvers like slow-motion diving and bullet jumps, which Arthur delivers effortlessly.
In our demonstration, they face off against a colossal tank-like enemy, among the biggest bosses I’ve encountered in Warframe. They work together to attack its vents, gradually weakening it for defeat.
In non-battle situations, the year 1999 provides an expansive open-world setting as a bonus. This exciting new vehicle, called Atomicycle, boasts impressive agility and versatility, serving not only as transportation but also as an explosive device. It even has a cool somersault move! Moreover, you can bring the Atomicycle from the 1999 zones to other explorable areas such as the Plains of Eidolon. The same goes for weapons – they’re interchangeable across regions as well.
As a long-time Warframe player, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news with fellow enthusiasts! A new Warframe is joining our ranks, and his name is none other than CYTE-09, a fresh sniper character class. What makes this even more enticing is the fact that he comes with an all-new Gemini skin.
Final Thoughts
The impressive display at Warframe’s 1999 Tennacon event leaves me pondering the extent of new content and duration, as it appears to be an extensive overhaul of Warframe’s visual identity.
I was drawn back to Warframe by last year’s update, but the intriguing blend of gritty atmosphere and captivating characters from 1999 keeps me engaged in the game regularly.
