As a seasoned gamer with a keen eye for cinematic masterpieces, I can’t help but feel like I’ve just stumbled upon the ultimate collaboration between two titans of their respective fields. The news that Warner Bros. and CJ ENM are joining forces to create remakes of each other’s films is nothing short of exhilarating!
Warner Bros. Pictures Group and CJ ENM have announced a partnership to collaboratively produce, fund, and distribute the international adaptations of both studios’ movies in both English and Korean languages.
Under the fresh arrangement, Warner Bros. will spearhead the production of English-language adaptations derived from CJ ENM’s collection, while Miky Lee’s CJ ENM will headline the creation of Korean-language films, utilizing the vast library of Warner Bros. Pictures for source material.
Miky Lee, CJ’s vice chairwoman, along with her team at CJ ENM, have built a formidable collection of films over time, making them a significant force in the Korean film industry. Their productions touch audiences globally. We are thrilled to collaborate with CJ ENM as we aim to increase our movie offerings from Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group worldwide,” stated Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, co-chairs and CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, on Tuesday.
Lee has been a trailblazer in the surge of Korean cinema, advocating for directors such as Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon Ho. With executive producer roles spanning films like “Lady Vengeance,” “The Host,” “Snowpiercer,” “The Handmaiden,” and “Parasite,” the latter of which made history by becoming the first non-English film to claim the Oscar for best picture.
Warner Bros. Pictures and CJ ENM are set to collaborate on the creation and financing of their separate remake versions. They’ll work together on crucial creative aspects such as selecting a screenwriter, director, producer, and cast, along with joint control over the movie’s finances and budget.
Warner Bros. Pictures is responsible for distributing the movies worldwide, with the exception that CJ ENM manages the release in countries such as South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Turkey, where they will handle their own versions of the remakes.
Jerry Kyoungboum Ko, head of film business at CJ ENM, stated in his own words: “Warner Bros. is a storied studio that spans Hollywood’s past and present, and it’s full of greatness. Warner Bros. and CJ have each established extensive libraries across North America and Asia, respectively. By joining forces, we can discover and breathe new life into forgotten treasures, sharing them with modern audiences to inspire. It’s an honor to be working alongside such a renowned brand that consistently pushes the boundaries of creativity and storytelling.
