David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, has shared which four superheroes are crucial to the DC Universe (DCU), a claim that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn supports. Currently, the DCU is in its infancy, with only one project, Creature Commandos, having been released. However, when Superman makes his debut and initiates the live-action and film aspect of the franchise, it’s anticipated that the DCU will quickly gain momentum as its key characters solidify and find a stronger footing.
In a recent chat with Warner Bros. Discovery investors during their Q1 earnings call, I, as a movie reviewer, was thrilled to hear that CEO David Zaslav singled out four DC Universe superheroes as the cornerstone for the future of the franchise. Essentially, it seems these heroes will serve as the heart and soul of the DCU, leading the charge for all other characters to follow. More recently, director James Gunn has backed up Zaslav’s assertion, confirming that these four heroes will play a pivotal role in ensuring the new franchise thrives. I, for one, am eagerly awaiting their arrival on the big screen!
In the earnings meeting, Zaslav mentioned that the foundation of the DC Universe will be built around four key characters: Superman, Supergirl, Batman, and Wonder Woman. As of now, Superman and Supergirl have actors assigned to them (David Corenswet as Superman and Milly Alcock as Supergirl), and they’ll make their on-screen debut when Superman hits theaters. However, the actors for Batman and Wonder Woman are yet to be revealed.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly for the promotion of the upcoming release of Superman, Gunn concurred with Zaslav that the four main characters will be exceptional. Yet, he emphasized that the franchise’s success won’t solely rely on these four characters; rather, he underscored their immense importance within the storyline.
It’s worth noting that there haven’t been many recent developments regarding DCU’s Wonder Woman and Batman. However, Gunn has disclosed that they are currently working on these characters at DC Studios.
I wouldn’t limit it to just those four characters, but rather emphasize their immense significance to us. At present, I’m quite pleased with the progress of two of those characters, while we’re currently handling the challenges associated with the remaining two.
Following Gunn’s recent confirmation, it’s clear that a new Wonder Woman movie is underway at DC Studios. This means that each of these characters will have their moment to shine during the initial phases of the DC Universe.
Initially, Superman will take center stage as he is set to debut in the live-action franchise, marking both his first appearance in a live-action project and the premiere of a general feature film within the series. Joining him in this venture are Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult stepping into the role of Lex Luthor. The movie is slated for release on July 11, 2025.
Where Will the DCU’s Big Four Show Up?
Initially, when Gunn unveiled his DC Universe (DCU), it was made clear that the series would be divided into distinct Chapters. For example, the first chapter of the DCU has officially been named “Gods and Monsters,” encompassing numerous projects which may eventually converge, assembling all DCU heroes in one instance.
It’s worth noting that both Superman and Supergirl are set to make an appearance in the upcoming title. Notably, though, it is only in 2026’s “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” – a film focusing exclusively on Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Supergirl – where her significant debut will occur.
In the DC Universe, it’s uncertain when Batman made his debut, but a movie called “The Brave and the Bold” is planned to feature him at some point, possibly adhering to the comic book series of the same name. This could potentially be Batman’s introduction in the franchise; however, there’s a chance he might appear earlier in another project, much like Supergirl, to ensure fans are already acquainted with the character when his movie premieres.
Up until now, there hadn’t been plans for a “Wonder Woman” movie, but Gunn has recently confirmed that a screenplay for such a film is being written. It’s important to mention that this project will be distinct from the “Paradise Lost” series on HBO Max, which has already been announced.
As a die-hard DC Universe fan, I can’t help but feel excited as we delve into the first act. Four pivotal characters from our beloved franchise are set to make their grand entrances. Over time, these encounters are bound to become increasingly frequent, weaving an intricate tapestry of narratives that will undoubtedly captivate us.
