Was a Remaster Necessary for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion?

The cherished video game series, “The Elder Scrolls,” has captivated countless gamers, offering them an unparalleled adventure through its immersive universe. Numerous players have grown up alongside this franchise, finding themselves engrossed in its world and living out the characters they’ve crafted.

Among some top-tier Elder Scrolls games, you might include Morrowind, Skyrim, and Oblivion. Notably, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has just launched its Remastered edition. This update brings enhanced visuals to elements like character models and the overall setting. But one may question, was it truly essential for Bethesda to revamp Oblivion?

Back in 2006, I was first introduced to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, a game that has stood the test of time, but now, in 20XX, it feels somewhat outdated. One of the most noticeable updates would be the graphical overhaul, bringing this classic title up to speed with today’s visually stunning video games. To be honest, its original visuals were never too shabby, but who wouldn’t appreciate a bit of an upgrade?

Unfortunately, running it on older systems can be quite the challenge due to its demanding system requirements. It’s not that I don’t love Oblivion and want to play it, but sometimes even dialing down the graphics settings isn’t enough for my outdated hardware to handle it smoothly.

In addition to graphic enhancements, there were also modifications to gameplay that some gamers might view as improvements, while others perceive them as streamlining Oblivion’s original mechanics. The combat system was redesigned, offering more flexibility for players by allowing various fighting styles. Moreover, fatigue no longer impacts melee damage for the player, and health regenerates when a player is out of battle (which is beneficial for those who struggle with skill aspects like myself).

Despite being remastered, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion wasn’t completely free of glitches, as certain quests continued to encounter problems. One such problem was the “Go Fish” quest where the Slaughterfish failed to appear as intended. Some players suggested that a reset of in-game days might help the fish spawn, but this solution seems inconsistent across different players. It’s possible that there are more bugs lurking, but overall, the game remains playable and enjoyable (with occasional frame rate drops).

The remastered edition of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion wasn’t strictly essential, but it still managed to captivate both longtime players and newcomers alike. In fact, the game quickly climbed to the top of Steam’s charts mere hours after its launch. Although the original game had its appeal, the remastered version proved irresistible to many, drawing in new fans for the Oblivion series thanks to its visually stunning graphics and mechanics that share some resemblance with Skyrim.
