Watch Omar Apollo’s Spanish Serenade for A24’s ‘Queer’ Directed by Luca Guadagnino

As a seasoned gamer and music enthusiast with a soft spot for indie artists, I must say that Omar Apollo has caught my attention with his latest single “Te Maldigo.” Being a long-time fan of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ work, the collaboration alone was enough to pique my interest. However, it wasn’t until I watched the hauntingly beautiful music video set in a dimly lit bar that I truly fell for this soulful serenade.

News that singer Omar Apollo would be making his acting debut alongside Daniel Craig in Luca Guadagnino‘s upcoming movie “Queer” sparked excitement on the internet, particularly about a rumored intimate scene with Craig. However, before the movie hits theaters, fans can look forward to a unique single from the artist that’s been released specifically for the film.

I Curse You,” which roughly translates to “Te Maldigo” in English, is a poignant and minimalist ballad primarily featuring Apollo’s tender vocalizations. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross lend their production skills, while the melancholic strums of a minor key guitar echo the somber rhythm of Apollo’s lyrics: “What a harsh world where you don’t cherish me, What can I do? I cast a curse upon you,” (translated from Spanish).

Guadagnino’s adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ original novel is titled “Queer,” and it chronicles the sensuous and romantic adventures of American expat William Lee, portrayed by Daniel Craig, in 1950s Mexico City. The music video takes place within a dimly lit bar that exudes a sense of melancholy, which may be reminiscent of the novel’s bar where the main character encounters his lover, Eugene Allerton, played by Drew Starkey.

See the above for the full video for “Te Maldigo,” which is available everywhere now.

Queer will begin screening in select theaters starting November 27.
