During our yearly Drama Actor Emmy Roundtable, the six celebrities gathered started sharing their apprehensions, spine-chilling experiences, and bits of knowledge they’ve gathered over time.
The participants – Walton Goggins, Cooper Koch, Diego Luna, Eddie Redmayne, Adam Scott, and Jeffrey Wright – ended up discussing much longer than scheduled, reminiscing about their early careers, dealing with hurtful comments such as “You won’t be cast because you sound gay” or “You don’t have the looks, so you need to work harder than everyone else”, and aspiring after more illustrious careers. For instance, Adam Scott attempted to mimic Ethan Hawke in his appearance and speech.
“I was examining pictures of him and thinking, ‘This is what I have to do. My hair, my jacket…’,” said the star of Severance. “I was trying to become this character, and it took me years to understand that the only thing you possess is yourself, and you’re the only one who can contribute that.”
Monster’s Koch, the newcomer at the table, confessed that he still struggles with this today. “I feel like I’m always comparing myself to others and I’m curious how you overcame that,” he asked his colleagues. “Or perhaps it never goes away.
During the discussion, Koch admitted that he often feels pressured to accept projects when there’s a lot of attention on him. Scott offered some guidance: “What I eventually realized was that the significant impacts on my career were the choices I made for reasons other than professional advancement,” he stated. “It was the choices I made because it seemed enjoyable, or it involved friends, or I simply adored the subject matter. Whenever I make a decision for any reason other than that, it takes an unexpected turn.”
Meanwhile, White Lotus’ Walton Goggins, who was on his way to the airport to catch a flight to New York for his first time hosting Saturday Night Live, was seeking any advice or reassurance. One suggested a rumor about a backstage vomit bucket at SNL (there isn’t); another recommended grabbing some sick bags from the plane. Fortunately, he wouldn’t need either.
Goggins, however, didn’t try to minimize the importance of the occasion. Instead, he said about it: “I’m embracing it with a childlike enthusiasm. I suppose some people might choose to redefine their image or become more aloof or cool during such opportunities. I’m just becoming more of who I am as an individual, and I’m not walking into it; I’m charging straight at it.”
At various points during the recording, Luna shared stories about being asked to lose his accent and move to LA for years; Redmayne spoke openly about accepting that sleepless nights are part of his process; and Wright admitted that he, indeed, enjoys going to ComicCon.
The full Emmy roundtables can be watched on IFC on Fridays at 9 p.m. PT/12 a.m. ET or streamed on AMC+. In addition to broadcast episodes of Off Script With The Hollywood Reporter on Fridays, complete videos of each Roundtable will be available on THR.com and YouTube from June 19 to June 22.
