Wayans Brothers Promise R-Rated ‘Scary Movie 6’ Return to Glory

It was refreshing news to learn that the Wayans brothers are coming back to the Scary Movie franchise for Scary Movie 6, after their departure following the second movie’s release. Now that the IP is back in its proper place, preparations are underway for the sixth film and Marlon Wayans assures fans that it will harken back to its original form, making for an enjoyable experience.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Wayans shared some exciting details about Scary Movie 6. After deviating creatively following their departure, he hinted that they will return to the elements that made the original movie a hilarious hit. Wayans expressed, “We’re no longer holding back. We’re going all out, with an R rating. We’ll keep the same fun and tone as the first one, but with our signature flavor.

The First Two ‘Scary Movie’ Installments Remain the Best

The “Scary Movie” series started in 2000, initially offering a hilarious satire of horror movies such as “Scream,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” “The Sixth Sense,” and others. Marlon and Shawn Wayans were responsible for the script on the initial films, while their brother, Keenen Ivory Wayans, directed the first two installments. The debut movie was a huge hit, although the second film saw a decline at the box office. However, it has continued to be beloved by fans long after its release. After the Wayans brothers were removed from the franchise, subsequent sequels opted for a more commercial-oriented PG-13 approach, and Marlon acknowledged that was when the series started to lose its direction. The “White Chicks” actor expressed that they were “missing that flavor” and that with the sixth film, “we’re bringing out Lowry’s and that Frank’s Hot Sauce” to reintroduce some zest and excitement back into the franchise.

David Zucker, known for directing Airplane, stepped in to helm Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4, which were profitable yet arguably lacked the originality that the Wayans brothers had brought to the series. Previously, Marlon mentioned they proposed an idea for the third film to the Weinsteins who were managing Dimension Films at the time. However, the Weinsteins also requested a better deal with more money. When the studio heads declined their proposal, the Wayans brothers opted out, only to later discover that not only did the Weinsteins not proceed with them, but they also utilized some of their ideas for the third film that Zucker directed. Malcolm D. Lee took charge of Scary Movie 5, which turned out to be the least successful installment in the franchise.

Last October, Marlon Wayans revealed on Instagram that the Scary Movie series was making a comeback with the whole family, as he stood next to an image of Ghostface from their Scary Movie films. At that time, Marlon posted, “WE’RE BACK!!! After almost two decades, the Wayans brothers are finally delivering what fans have long been requesting – a revival of the beloved SCARY MOVIE franchise!” It’s yet to be determined which movies the new installments will mock, but with the current surge in horror movie popularity, there’s no shortage of material for the creators to choose from.

Scary Movie 6 hits screens on June 12, 2026.
