Initially, there was uncertainty about the future of physical games for Switch 2, but now SEGA has revealed that “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds” will be releasing a complete game card. The catch is that it won’t be available until next year, following a digital release. However, fans are ready to be patient in anticipation. Here’s hoping this signals the arrival of more full game cards for Switch 2.
SEGA recently published an FAQ focusing on the Nintendo edition of CrossWorlds. In this document, they confirmed that a physical game card for the current-gen Nintendo system is scheduled for release in early 2026. For those preferring the digital version, it will be available towards the end of 2025, potentially challenging Mario Kart World for racing supremacy during the Christmas season.
Instead of the Dragon Quest I & II 2D-HD Remake, where only new owners benefit, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will provide an enhancement path for original Nintendo Switch owners. Regardless if they own the physical Switch version 1 cartridge or a digital copy, fans can purchase an upgrade pack to access all the features exclusive to the Switch 2 edition. While a free upgrade would have been ideal, this option still seems reasonable.
The news from CrossWorlds about SEGA is intriguing, as it demonstrates that they are open to learning from past errors. The issue with Sonic X Shadow Generations was that there wasn’t an upgrade path for Switch 1 owners who wanted to switch to the Switch 2 version, a decision that drew criticism. Additionally, the game being a Game-Key Card, essentially a digital release on a cartridge, didn’t make things better, despite not being tied to specific consoles.
It appears that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds seems to be a step towards regaining the series’ former glory, following Team Sonic Racing which was seen as a deviation from Sonic’s traditional racing games. The Sonic team steered clear of significant crossovers and opted for a more conservative approach, despite incorporating some distinctive team-based racing elements. Crossworlds offers an exciting twist by introducing characters from Persona, Yakuza, and Nickelodeon (as downloadable content), in addition to providing more engaging tracks for racing.
