We Finally Know How Beetlejuice Died - And Possibly How He Got His Powers

As a long-time fan of all things Beetlejuice, I was absolutely thrilled to uncover the fascinating backstory behind my beloved character in the upcoming sequel. The revelation that Beetlejuice was once a humble graverobber during the Black Death era and met his enchanting wife Delores in a charnel pit is simply delightful!

Contains major spoilers for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”

Intrigued about why Beetlejuice, the beloved character, specializes in frightening the living? A new snippet from “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” could enlighten you on how he joined the ranks of the deceased and crossed paths with his charming spouse, Delores, played by Monica Bellucci. If you pay attention, it might also hint at how he acquired his powers.

In the scene presented, Beetlejuice (played by Michael Keaton) discloses to Bob and his colleagues at work that he once lived as a humble gravedigger in an Italian city during the time of the Black Death, or bubonic plague. While stealing from a charnel pit one day, he encounters Delores, who seems to be a plague doctor. They get married in unholy rituals – a goat sacrifice is included. After a night of passionate wedding bliss, they drink together. Beetlejuice soon realizes that his bride belongs to a death cult when she tries to poison him, aiming for immortality as per their customs. However, instead of accepting this betrayal quietly, he kills her with an axe. This is why Delores bears a facial wound in the afterlife. The movie’s trailers later revealed how Beetlejuice removed Delores’ ring finger to give it to Lydia, a mystery that had remained unsolved for 36 years.

This scene implies the origins of Delores’ abilities – she appears to drain life force from beings by extracting their souls, as depicted in a past trailer, which could hint at Beetlejuice’s impending demise. Moreover, it suggests that Beetlejuice has existed in the afterlife for an extended period. Could these events also be the source of his powers?

Might Beetlejuice’s death explain his powers?

Beetlejuice’s powers have always stood out as distinct from other immortals in this universe, with an ominous ability that surpasses the body-twisting abilities associated with death. Unlike other ghosts, he possesses a unique power to manipulate reality itself. This could be due to his peculiar background, which might account for his immense power and the specificity of his existence.

It’s evident that Delores’ association with Beetlejuice enhances his ghostly powers, given her obvious ties to the occult. As a believer, even if indirectly, she seems to have given him some of her magical power when he was sacrificed. Since it’s a cult centered around death and their sustenance comes from the souls of innocents, it’s intriguing to guess that something unusual took place during Delores’ sacrifice of Beetlejuice to whatever dark entity she worships. The film should clarify why and how this happened. The scores will be evened out when “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” hits theaters on September 6th.
