We Finally Know When Feige And Co. Reached Out About Bringing Back Daredevil: ‘For Me It Was Shocking’

As a gamer who has followed the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception, I can confidently say that the announcement of “Daredevil: Born Again” was a thrilling moment for fans like me. The original series on Netflix was a refreshing take on the MCU, offering a darker and more gritty depiction of the Marvel world.

Initially, when “Daredevil” premiered on Netflix, it presented a unique perspective in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, characterized by its dark and violent tone. The series was extremely well-received by fans, leading to expectations that not only would the characters be integrated into the official MCU, but the original cast members would continue their roles as well. Despite the show’s cancellation, there remained optimism among fans. However, when it was announced that a new series titled “Daredevil: Born Again” would join the lineup of upcoming Marvel shows, even the most ardent fans were taken aback. Perhaps no one was more surprised than Charlie Cox, who portrayed Matt Murdock, as he revealed he received the offer to reprise his role four years ago.

Over the weekend, I attended D23 in Anaheim where we got our first glimpse of the upcoming series, “Daredevil: Born Again.” The show features a reunion of the principal cast from the initial series, several of whom were present at the event. During the weekend, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio spoke with People magazine about their return, and the stars disclosed the timeline for when discussions about bringing them back began. According to Cox…

We had a TV show that ended production around late 2016 to early 2018, and learned it was terminated somewhere within that timeframe. It wasn’t until the middle of 2020 when we received a call from Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, expressing interest in resurrecting the characters.

From 2015 up until 2018, Daredevil graced our screens for three seasons on Netflix, but unfortunately, the series came to an end at that point. This decision was made by Netflix, and it left a two-year period before the character rights were due to revert back to Marvel. It seems clear that Charlie Cox and his co-stars were always the top contenders for these roles. As soon as Kevin Feige had the chance, he reached out to Cox about potentially bringing these characters back under the Marvel umbrella.

Indeed, during those star-spanned years, uncertainty reigned over what might transpire next. Vincent D’Onofrio often expressed a fair degree of confidence that Marvel Studios would reach out at some point, but Jeremy Cox was less certain. In time, D’Onofrio’s faith in the Kingpin’s eventual return proved accurate. As they phrased it…

D’Onofrio: It became really pathetic in Charlie’s eyes.

Cox: He was right. I didn’t see it. For me, it was shocking. Shocking. It was a great show.

From what we saw in the D23 trailer, Daredevil: Born Again seems to be following closely along as Season 4 of the Netflix series. The original cast is returning, including Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of The Punisher, suggesting it aligns with fan and actor desires. We’ll get a definitive answer when it premieres on Disney+ in March 2025 for subscribers.
