As a seasoned gamer with a decade-long passion for action films, I can confidently say that Halle Berry‘s Sofia is a character I’d love to see back in the John Wick universe. It’s been five long years since we last saw her in Chapter 3: Parabellum, and it feels like forever since she went her separate ways with John Wick in Casablanca.
After the conclusion of John Wick: Chapter 4, it’s uncertain whether the main film series will carry on with Chapter 5 or if this marks the end for Keanu Reeves’ iconic character. Luckily, the John Wick universe isn’t finished growing as there are spinoffs in the works, such as the 2025 release of John Wick Presents: Ballerina and a film centering around Donnie Yen’s Cain. There’s also been discussion about Halle Berry’s character Sofia, who was introduced in John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum, potentially getting her own spinoff, with Berry expressing interest as long as it happens sooner rather than later.
During a chat with THR about her upcoming movie “Never Let Go,” which is set to hit theaters in 2024, interviewer Brian Davids reminisced about anticipating the release of “John Wick: Chapter 4” and speculating that Sofia would be involved, with him imagining a scene where she and John were on a mission to safeguard her daughter. When Davids inquired if Berry ever contemplated potential future developments, she replied:
Indeed, I was hoping for that scenario to unfold, yet it seems they chose a different path instead. Frankly, I found it intriguing as a storyline concept. We certainly discussed it, and even hinted at it in John Wick: Chapter 3. There’s been talk about a possible spinoff with Lionsgate, although it’s still uncertain. The sooner we can make it happen, the better, but only time will tell if it does. I’m quite fond of that universe and both John Wick and that character, so who knows what the future holds? We’ll see.
In essence, most characters from the John Wick series make their appearance in just one film, while Ian McShane as Winston, Lance Reddick as Charon, and Laurence Fishburne as The Bowery King are the main recurring figures starting with Chapter 2. Consequently, it’s understandable that Sofia was absent in Chapter 4, given her departure from John’s side in Casablanca. However, I share Halle Berry’s sentiments that it would have added an exciting twist to the fourth film if Sofia had reappeared. Perhaps, Sofia’s presence could have made John’s confrontation with Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont in Chapter 4 less challenging.
It’s been five years since “John Wick 3” hit theaters, and as Berry has expressed, she remains open to reprising the role of Sofia in a spin-off. However, she’s not certain for how long she’ll wait for this opportunity. For the moment though, she’s ready if director Chad Stahelski proposes a spinoff movie or a limited series.
In a heartbeat. I loved that character, and I love Chad.
In addition to the film “Ballerina” and the upcoming movie “Caine,” there’s also a TV series called “John: Wick: Under the High Table” being developed, which continues after the events of Chapter 4. The story will focus on new characters trying to dismantle a criminal organization. Since Halle Berry has significant star power, it’s worth considering a spin-off movie featuring her character. If that doesn’t work out, she could potentially appear in the “Caine” movie or “Under the High Table” in a secondary or even co-leading role. Unfortunately, the film “Ballerina” is already set with its cast following principal photography and reshoots.
Of course, we’ll make sure to inform you if Halle Berry re-enters the John Wick world in any role. In the meantime, why not watch her acclaimed portrayal of Momma in Never Let Go?
