We Put Together A Compilation Of That Time Selena Gomez Practiced Losing An Emmy (And Then Crushed Her Response At The Show Later)

As a fan who has followed Selena Gomez‘s career since her Disney days, it was a thrill to see her nominated for an Emmy for her role in “Only Murders in the Building.” Though she didn’t take home the trophy this time, watching her perfect her losing face during interviews was quite amusing. It felt like a longshot given the competitive category and the presence of previous winners, but Selena handled it with grace and humor that we’ve come to expect from her.

Following her role in “Only Murders in the Building” spanning over three seasons, Selena Gomez was long-awaitedly recognized with an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Mabel. This was her initial acting recognition, yet she faced formidable opponents. Jean Smart, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Quinta Brunson, and Ayo Edebiri were also nominated, with Smart eventually winning the award for “Hacks”. Despite anticipating not winning the Emmy, we put together a video montage of Gomez rehearsing her gracious losing speech.

Gomez and her Only Murders co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short appeared on The Tonight Show to promote OMITB Season 4 right after its premiere on the 2024 TV schedule. During their interview, Fallon asked all three Emmy nominees to practice how they’d react if/when they lost the Emmy. Via TopMob’s Instagram, Gomez’s practiced reaction was on par with her actual one, from the way she clapped to the way she turned to the person next to her to give them her thoughts:

Though it was disheartening that Gomez didn’t clinch the award, her reaction upon losing was quite amusing, displaying an uncanny sense of grace and acceptance. Whether she had rehearsed this response or it spontaneously occurred to her in the moment remains a mystery, but her demeanor was exactly as expected. Given the highly competitive category that boasted three past winners – Smart, Brunson, and Edebiri – it wasn’t surprising that Gomez’s victory seemed unlikely, despite her exceptional performance in the Hulu whodunnit series.

Nevertheless, numerous opportunities lie ahead for her triumph, since the series “Only Murders” has been reinstated for Season 5. Here’s hoping that one of these years, the current losing streak will transform into a successful run.

Although Gomez didn’t win at the 76th Emmys, her evening remained exceptionally memorable. She posted adorable clips of her niece leaping around and applauding when Gomez’s category appeared on TV, affectionately referred to as “Tia.” Consequently, even though she had to display a gracious loser’s smile for the cameras, it seems that behind the scenes, the celebration was grand.

The series “Only Murders in the Building” is currently in its fourth season, and it’s already confirmed that there will be a Season 5. This means that Gomez may not need to employ her honed skill of losing facts as often next year, but it’s always possible she might have to do so.

Despite Selena Gomez not taking home the award, her nomination is well-deserved, a fact that becomes evident when you watch the latest episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” on Hulu each Tuesday.
