As a dedicated fan who’s been roped in by the captivating tales of the Dutton clan for what feels like an eternity, I can’t help but reflect on the bittersweet ending of Yellowstone, a show that has left its mark on our collective consciousness. The final farewell to Jamie, a character as complex as a tangled barbed-wire fence, was as satisfying as a well-cooked steak at the Broken Rock.
Spoilers below for Yellowstone’s deadly Season 5 finale, so be warned if you haven’t yet watched on Paramount Network!
Friends, one of the most anticipated TV series slated for 2024 has sadly bid farewell, although spin-offs featuring Yellowstone are still on the horizon. The acclaimed drama concluded its successful run by allowing Kelly Reilly’s character, Beth, to permanently eliminate her troubled sibling Jamie. Despite his character receiving a wound to the abdomen, lead actor Wes Bentley shared why he didn’t keep any mementos from the set.
Jamie, who tended to diverge from the Dutton family’s usual interests and pursuits, wasn’t frequently involved in scenes with the main cast members on the show. Instead, he was usually depicted at his office or his comfortable, albeit unremarkable home. This suggests that the actor didn’t have much opportunity to work with iconic props or distinctive set decorations often.
So it’s probably no surprise that the item Wes Bentley thought about taking was very close to his vest. Here’s how he put it in an interview video shared on Yellowstone’s Instagram:
In most cases, I should have brought along one of the custom-made suits, as it likely would have been prudent to do so.
Despite criticisms about Jamie’s forthrightness and seemingly indifferent attitude towards others, it’s clear that he put effort into appearing careless. In contrast to his brief cowboy phase, throughout the five seasons, Jamie was consistently well-dressed, often outshining other characters on screen with his stylish suits.
However, although Bentley considered it a clever decision, he clarified his reasons for ultimately deciding not to take any of the custom-made suits, stating:
To be honest, I sensed an overwhelming negativity from Jamie that made our scenes together quite difficult. It left me questioning if I wanted to bring any of this energy into my regular life. Frankly, I’m starting to feel like I’d rather let go of it all.
If there was the slightest possibility that Jamie’s unpleasant aura could seep into the very fibers of these garments, it might be wiser to discard them by setting them on fire, instead of preserving them as keepsakes. It’s safest not to take any risks in this situation.
Wes Bentley didn’t take any items from his role as Jamie on Yellowstone, but his costar Kelly Reilly did acquire one of Beth Dutton’s distinctive props and selected wardrobe pieces. As she shared in the same interview:
I possess a lighter that serves as a memento of Beth. Some of my dresses are mine, but I had purchased others specifically for Beth, so I took those home with me. However, I do own a lighter that belongs to my collection of Beth memorabilia.
In much the same way Jamie consistently presented a polished, formal appearance at board meetings, Beth continually updated her wardrobe, whether it was for a glamorous nighttime event or casual outings around the ranch. It’s no surprise then that she yearns to incorporate more of those styles into her own life, not just the pieces she has personally acquired.
Though Yellowstone may appear to have concluded as a solo headliner, enthusiasts can anticipate the Beth and Rip continuation spinoff, the Michelle Pfeiffer-led follow-up titled The Madison, and the second season of 1923. Moreover, there’s also the previously announced spinoff set at the 6666 ranch and a third prequel series, this one set in the 1940s.
