As a seasoned horror movie fan and critic, I find the creation of the Arcadian monsters in this film to be both intriguing and terrifying. The combination of these creatures’ physical attributes is not only visually appealing but also thought-provoking, making us ponder what could survive in an apocalyptic world.

Released on April 12, 2024, this post-apocalyptic horror thriller has been sending chills down my spine with its terrifying monster designs. What Is Arcadian About?

As a huge fan of post-apocalyptic horror thrillers, I’d describe “Arcadian” as a chilling masterpiece directed by Benjamin Brewer from a gripping screenplay by Mike Nilon. The story unfolds fifteen years after a devastating event that left Earth’s population decimated. Paul (Cage), along with his two brave twin sons, Joseph (Jaeden Martell) and Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins), call a secluded farmhouse their home. At night, they’re under siege by enigmatic creatures whose existence is shrouded in mystery. These beings are repelled by light, compelling Paul and his boys to live in constant darkness, making each sunrise a precious moment of relief.

According to the apocalyptic movie script, Thomas was told to stay put, but his feelings for Charlotte Rose (Sadie Sovernal) overcame his obedience, leading him to leave Joseph behind and journey to see her. This decision left them both exposed to the dangerous monsters lurking in the wilderness at night. Unfortunately, Thomas met with an accident and fell into a cave, but Paul arrived in time to save him before a massive group of monsters descended upon them.

As we fight for survival against the relentless creatures, I manage to corner one inside our farmhouse and barricade it with makeshift traps. Desperate to save my family, I rig up a homemade cart and venture out to rescue my father and injured brother. Paul and Thomas are gravely wounded in the process, so Thomas takes them to Charlotte’s house for medical aid, but they are unfortunately turned away. Upon returning home, I realize that these monsters have been digging underground tunnels and breaching homes through their floors. I reinforce our farmhouse as best I can, but soon enough, Charlotte’s house is attacked, forcing her and Thomas to return. Paul miraculously awakens just in time and devises a plan for us to face the horrifying creatures that have taken over our world.

What Are the Monsters in Arcadian?

Initially, the ominous, elongated creatures from Arcadian bear a striking resemblance to the Xenomorphs in the Alien series. The parallels become evident when this four-legged beast adopts an upright stance on two legs, revealing its large, egg-shaped head and rows of jagged, dripping metallic teeth that instill terror. Furthermore, its slimy secretions and spider-like protrusions emerging from the back of its head echo the iconic Xenomorph design. However, in contrast to their cinematic counterparts, these creatures hunt collectively and are averse to light.

In addition to the Xenomorph resemblances, the lethal beings in Arcadian exhibit physiological characteristics akin to insects and primates. Their physique includes unpolished fur, spindly extremities, jagged talons, and robust jaws. When they consume, they emit unsettling sucking noises, while their mouths closing produces a harsh clattering sound.

While crawling on all four limbs, these monstrous beings take on the semblance of misshapen apes with hunchbacks, distorted heads, and no discernible eyes. They exhibit an additional oral cavity within their bodies for digestion, accompanied by a bizarre, protruding snout reminiscent of a fly. These creatures possess the ability to elongate certain body parts, such as unappetizing claws, and boast compact, folded arms resembling those of a Praying Mantis.

As a gamer, I’d describe the Arcadian creature designs as having a unique blend that sets them apart from both mammals and insects. There’s an unmistakable canine quality to their appearance, a characteristic reminiscent of a beloved classic Disney character, as director Benjamin Brewer himself revealed.

How Did Goofy Influence the Arcadian Monsters?

In an interview with IGN to generate buzz for the ominous new film featuring Nicholas Cage, Benjamin Brewer shared his unique perspective: “Although there are striking resemblances between the Arcadian creatures and well-known monster archetypes, I personally draw inspiration from Goofy. Early concept sketches hint at this influence.”

Since the outset, my concept revolved around oversized nocturnal eyes and excessively large, spaced-out teeth for this creature. Teeth that seemed disproportionately too large for its mouth. A notable inspiration for this design was Goofy, the beloved Disney character.

Brewer elaborated on his motivation to infuse monsters with soulful characteristics, drawing an analogy from the heartwarming film scene where Goofy and his son Max shared a terrifying experience together.

In that movie, the Goofy element adds an intriguing twist. The nightmare sequence and the portrayal of Bigfoot in particular are frighteningly vivid. We infused our creatures with excessive personality to create an unsettling effect for the audience.

Goofy initially served as the model for the Arcadian monsters in the project, but when Cage joined the team, he discovered the Disney-inspired elements to be overly adorable and opted against eliminating them. Upon arrival on set, Cage jokingly remarked, “I can’t eliminate that. It resembles a Goofy stuffed toy.

The Arcadian creatures possess some traits similar to Goofy’s, but they combine various physical attributes and characteristics from a vast array of wild animals. Brewer intentionally designed them this way to illustrate which animal types might endure an apocalyptic scenario.

“The collection of life forms serves as a representation of Earth’s resilient inhabitants. If this bizarre assembly of traits represents the most thriving species currently, what does it imply about our responsibility as the caring stewards of the planet?”

As a horror enthusiast, I’m thrilled by the prospect of the Arcadian monsters making their mark in the genre. These creatures pay tribute to the timeless terror of classic movie monsters while also infusing fresh fear with their unique traits. If a sequel is produced, the Arcadian monsters could potentially become the next horror sensation.

Arcadian is available to stream now on AMC+.
