What Do We Know about the Recently Announced Borderlands 4?

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and skepticism regarding Borderlands 4. The teaser unveiled at Gamescom was intriguing, to say the least, but the departure from Pandora has me scratching my head.

As a gamer, it seems clear to me that Gearbox Software must’ve had confidence in the success of the Borderlands movie. Otherwise, why announce the release of Borderlands 4 just a few weeks after the movie came out? It feels like they’re riding the wave of anticipation and excitement!

At Gamescom, they unveiled an official sneak peek into the upcoming Borderlands installment, revealing only minor details about the sequel. However, the official announcement did disclose a fresh piece of information.

Borderlands 4 Will NOT be Set in Pandora

Based on the official teaser summary, the upcoming Borderlands title is venturing beyond Pandora and setting foot on a completely different planet. Check out the trailer here:

The official description:

In the upcoming edition of the ultimate loot-shooting game, players take on the character of a legendary Vault Hunter, battling waves of adversaries while hunting for fresh riches across a completely new planet.

From the sneak peek, the planet appears different from what we’ve seen as Pandora in the game, given that it’s shown with less water than the official artwork depicts. Yet intriguingly, there are Psycho helmets raining down, which could hint at a connection to the storyline. It’s plausible that the hand collecting the mask in the teaser might be a key character in the forthcoming narrative.

Exciting New Directions

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel thrilled by the tantalizing glimpses we’ve caught of Borderlands 4 in the teaser. However, there’s still a veil of secrecy surrounding the game, with very little information disclosed so far. But, in an interview via Eurogamer, Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford has shared some insights about the upcoming title that has me on the edge of my seat!

“Our team at Gearbox Software has been brimming with ideas for Borderlands since we pioneered the looter shooter genre. Now, we’re pouring all our energy into making Borderlands 4 exceptional and improving everything that makes Borderlands great, while also venturing into thrilling new territories.”

Changing the location from Pandora for the game represents a shift in perspective, yet it’s intriguing to understand how this new environment will offer novelty instead of rehashing the setting of the previous game by merely applying a fresh layer of paint.

Recent String of Duds

Despite being an established series for quite some time, certain enthusiasts argue that the latest additions to the Borderlands franchise, such as Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and New Tales from the Borderlands, haven’t quite hit the bullseye for the developers.

Fans should also remember the massive elephant in the room: the box office bomb that was the Borderlands movie. The fact that the fanbase didn’t even step up to watch the film in theaters could indicate that not many people are fans of the space wasteland that Borderlands is all about.

On a brighter side, it’s possible that the recent failures with Borderlands content might help Gearbox learn from their mistakes and determine what approaches to avoid when creating Borderlands 4.

It’s encouraging that there might still be time to restore the Intellectual Property, given that the film left viewers feeling dissatisfied.

It’s yet unknown when Borderlands 4 will be released, however, it’s anticipated that the game will come out for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S around 2025.
