As a gamer looking back on my gaming days, I’ve come to realize that even the most iconic characters don’t stay in the spotlight forever. My character, “Mindfreak”, enjoyed a good run, but eventually, the curtain fell, leaving fans like me pondering where my next big appearance would be. The answer? Back on the small screen and beyond it! So, what has Angel been up to lately? What made him such a household name, and why did he decide to leave his show? Stick around to discover the answers.

Who is Criss Angel & why did he become so popular?

Initially, Criss Angel led a life as a traveling musician. Later, he teamed up with the magician Klayton to create the band and illusion duo Angeldust. They released five albums together before disbanding. Subsequently, he showcased his skills in the TV movie “The Science of Magic,” followed by performing an attention-grabbing feat: remaining submerged underwater for 24 hours inside a water tank erected in Times Square.

From August 27th to August 28th, 2002, I embarked on a 24-hour fasting challenge to successfully pull off the stunt. Previous trial runs helped me gauge how long I could remain underwater without needing refreshments, meals, or even a bathroom break. Leveraging these insights, I adapted my approach for the Times Square rendition of the trick. In part, this illusion was dedicated to my role model, Harry Houdini.

After wrapping up that intense event, I found myself briefly admitted to a hospital due to dehydration. Yet, this brief setback was overshadowed by the attention I received, which eventually led to the ABC Family special, “Criss Angel: Mindfreak – The Modern Illusionist.” This special later morphed into the series “Chris Angel: Mindfreak” on the A&E Network. Prior to the launch of this popular show, I was also featured in a special titled “Supernatural” on the SyFy channel.

Why was Criss Angel’s Mindfreak canceled?

The TV show “Mindfreak” significantly boosted Criss Angel’s prestige in the magic community. Initially well-received, the show lasted for six seasons and 94 episodes until it concluded in 2010. Throughout its broadcast, Angel rose to become the most prominent magician in the nation, rekindling public interest in magic, and frequently gracing talk shows and reality TV programs as his fame increased. It isn’t clear why “Mindfreak” was terminated, but it appears that Angel may have decided to move on to focus on other ventures.

After “Mindfreak” concluded, Angel debuted another series titled “Criss Angel BeLIEve” on SpikeTV. This channel is known for hosting some of the strangest Marvel shows to ever grace television screens. However, “BeLIEve” ran for only one season consisting of 13 episodes in 2013 before it was discontinued. Interestingly, the production of “BeLIEve” coincided with a magic show of the same name that Angel was performing at the Luxor in Las Vegas alongside Cirque du Soleil. Despite receiving negative reviews, Angel honored his contractual obligations with the Luxor and continued to fine-tune the show until its closure in 2016. Unfortunately, when he introduced a magic show called “Mindfreak Live!” at the Luxor, an injury occurred that temporarily hindered his career progression.

How Criss Angel’s most controversial trick almost killed him

On March 2017, Criss Angel executed a stunt during “Mindfreak Live!” where he hung upside-down while encased in a straitjacket. Ordinarily, Angel manages to free himself effortlessly from such constraints, but this time, he fainted. Suspended from the rig, he was gradually lowered onto the stage, and the performance curtain was drawn. The show had to be halted 11 minutes in as they rushed him to a hospital. He left the ER on his own accord later that night, and subsequently underwent extensive tests over the weekend to assess if he was well enough to carry on with magic performances.

Despite a potential mishap that could have led to a serious fall onto the stage, he managed to keep going with the show. What makes this situation all the more intriguing is that Angel, who achieved the longest body suspension in 2005 by hanging upside-down for over five hours and forty-two minutes using eight fishhooks in Times Square, holds this record. However, it was later broken by illusionist Matt Zane in 2008, using only four hooks instead.

The trick, like many of Angels’ stunts, is somewhat controversial both for how dangerous it is to his well-being (the hooks were inserted directly into his skin) and how frequently he revealed the secret behind it. Angel has never been one to keep his magical ways close to his vest and often allows fans a peek behind the curtain and explains how he pulls off his magical stunts. He has published his secrets in a book and also revealed them on some of his shows. All of that has made him a subject of controversy and somewhat unpopular among magicians. Unsurprisingly, he continues to ply his trade in spite of these brickbats.

Currently, Criss Angel continues to excel at his craft as a magician. His “Criss Angel: Mindfreak” magic show has relocated and is now a daily attraction at the Planet Hollywood’s Crasser’s Palace in Las Vegas. He takes the stage five evenings a week for captivated audiences in the bustling Criss Angel Theatre.

Apart from his Las Vegas performances, Angel was also a judge on the NBC game show “Phenomenon.” He additionally starred in a reality series on The CW titled “Criss Angel’s Magic with the Stars.” Furthermore, he has made appearances as himself in multiple movies centered around magic. His private life is equally intriguing; he shares three children with Australian singer Shaunyl Benson and they have been together for over a decade, experiencing marriage, divorce, a relationship rekindling, and another engagement.

Johnny, their son, bravely overcame two instances of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which inspired his mother, Angel, to establish The Johnny Crisstopher Children’s Charitable Foundation. This nonprofit organization focuses on increasing awareness about pediatric cancers. Angel organizes fundraising events for the foundation and collaborates with the Make a Wish Foundation as well. It’s evident that behind every great magician lies a heart full of compassion.
