Contains spoilers for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”
The Fantastic Four: Initial Ventures” could potentially occur in a distinct Marvel Cinematic Universe reality (it unfolds on Earth-828 instead of Earth-616), yet this doesn’t signify a departure from the usual elements that make a Marvel film enjoyable. It retains the ample doses of humor, a grand climactic action sequence, and post-credit scenes that might leave you subtly scolding those who rush to exit before the end. Interestingly, “Fantastic Four: Initial Ventures” includes not just one but two additional scenes worth staying for.
Following the triumph of the Fantastic Four against Galactus (Ralph Ineson), approximately a year elapses before the story concludes, and they regain their status as cherished heroes. Fast-forwarding four more years, we reach the mid-credits scene, implying that Franklin Richards is now five years old. At this moment, Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) is reading to her son, but she pauses when she hears an unusual sound coming from where Franklin is seated. Curiosity piqued, she approaches and finds a mysterious figure in a green cloak beside Franklin. This individual appears to be Doctor Doom, who will be portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in “Avengers: Doomsday.
Initially, concerns arose when Downey was chosen to portray the legendary villain, with some questioning if he could deliver a convincing performance or if the choice was just for monetary gain. However, the mid-credits scene doesn’t provide much insight into his acting abilities since he remains silent and we don’t even catch a glimpse of his face; only Doom’s famous mask is visible in his hand. The scene essentially sets up Downey as the antagonist for the next “Avengers” movie, and it seems that his interest in Franklin could be crucial to the plot. Given that Galactus coveted Franklin’s power, it’s reasonable to assume that Doom would want it as well.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps post-credits scene is just for fun
In “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, there’s an extra scene towards the end of the credits, distinct from “Avengers: Doomsday” and Doctor Doom. Instead, it’s a delightful animated introduction for the actual “Fantastic Four” cartoon series existing within their universe. This cartoon is hinted at throughout the film, such as when Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) mentions he doesn’t actually say “It’s clobberin’ time” in real life and it’s just a quote from the cartoon. The most memorable aspect of this scene is that the cartoon’s theme song features a choir chanting “Fantastic Four”, much like the main theme heard throughout the movie.
Is this Doctor Doom from Earth-828, or does he originate from another universe? Given that “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” mark the end of the Multiverse Saga, anything could happen.
Another possibility to express this could be: It’s worth considering what Victor’s intentions are regarding the Baxter Building. Despite showing some interest in Franklin Richards, his hand extended toward the FF’s traditional adversary, it seems that Victor might want something more than just a cosmetic fix for his scarred face if Franklin has already healed him. While this would certainly offer Robert Downey Jr. an opportunity to avoid using prosthetics when portraying the villain, there appears to be a deeper motivation at play.
“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is in theaters now.
