As a longtime fan of the Transformers franchise and someone who has grown up with these iconic characters, I can confidently say that the latest movie, Transformers One, has left me utterly thrilled and eager for more. The gradual transformation of Megatron from a loyal follower to a bitter adversary is one of the most compelling villain arcs I’ve seen in recent memory, making him the most sympathetic character in the movie.
Warning: This article includes significant spoilers from the ending credits sequence of Transformers One, along with most of the subsequent plot. If you haven’t seen the latest animated film yet, be very careful before proceeding.
There’s been quite a lot of excitement about the movie “Transformers One“, which many critics are hailing as the best in the series so far. With the addition of its animated prequel, featuring Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry, to the 2024 movie schedule, and given the positive responses from fans in early screenings, it seems likely that both long-time fans and newcomers will be flocking to cinemas opening weekend, eager for a return to the animated roots of the franchise and the possibility of an end credits scene.
Let’s delve into the intriguing post-credit scene from the first “Transformers” movie, unravel how it advances the “Transformers” series, and discuss its implications for Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Cybertron’s destiny. Join us as we dissect this brief yet impactful sequence and its significant aftermath.
And again, major spoilers ahead…
What Happens In The Transformers One End Credits Sequence
In many films outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are fantastic end credit scenes, and this is certainly true for “Transformers One”. Towards the movie’s conclusion, following Orion Pax (portrayed by Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry) transforming into Optimus Prime and Megatron, respectively, they overcome Sentinel Prime (Jon Hamm). After their victory, these longtime companions, who were once friends, become the iconic enemies we see in other “Transformers” films. Optimus takes leadership of Cybertron while Megatron is exiled with the High Guard.
At the end credits of the first Transformers film, Megatron performs an impressive ceremony in his secret chamber, renaming the High Guard as the Decepticons – the notorious villainous faction of transformers we’ve grown to despise. Furthermore, the now completely corrupted Megatron adopts the Megatronus Prime insignia that Sentinel Prime had etched into him earlier in the movie as the symbol for his new group, followed by a powerful mission declaration and arguably the most memorable movie line of the year:
We will not be blinded by his deception. We are the ones who are Decepticons. Rise Up!
The falsehood Megatron refers to is the facade surrounding Sentinel Prime, the so-called noble figure of Cybertron, who in reality has been secretly working against the Transformers. Instead of supporting them, he’s been stealing their essential components (cogs) and providing resources to the malevolent Quintessons.
How Transformers One Perfectly Set Up The Birth Of The Decepticons
Megatron’s progression towards becoming increasingly malevolent was anticipated given his past, yet Josh Cooley and the entire team behind Transformers One skillfully constructed a narrative that subtly depicted Megatron, once an ally of Optimus Prime, moving away from the heroic path. The trailer for Transformers One offers a glimpse into Megatron’s future role as Decepticon leader, and it is this portrayal that truly enhances the impact and authenticity of his transformation.
During the film, Megatron deeply admires Sentinel Prime and is willing to go to great lengths to aid what he believes is Cybertron’s loyal leader. This mostly involves meeting his production targets in the Energon mines. However, when Megatron uncovers that Sentinel has been deceiving his fellow robots for personal gain, living like a monarch, Megatron starts to lose control. It’s not an immediate transformation but rather a slow, progressive change that makes for one of the most compelling villain arcs in recent cinema history.
Despite being portrayed as the villain by the movie’s end, showcasing the emergence of the Decepticons, Megatron remains the most compassionate character due to his actions being driven not by choice, but out of a desire to rectify the injustices he perceives on Cybertron. The group that later becomes known as the Decepticons initially concealed their identities within various vehicles, adopting their name as a symbol of Sentinel Prime’s deception and betrayal of them and Cybertron.
It Looks Like All Roads Lead To War For Cybertron, And It Sounds Epic
Around a decade ago, we wondered if the Transformers series would shift its setting to Cybertron someday, and indeed, Transformers One delivered on that promise. Following the movie’s events and the thrilling end credits scene, it seems that this will continue to be the case as the focus now lies on the battle between the Autobots and Decepticons – at least in the animated films.
Throughout the movie, tiny hints were subtly planted about Megatron and Optimus Prime clashing due to their contrasting beliefs and personalities. These seeds eventually grew into full-blown conflicts by the end, setting up an anticipated war for Cybertron between these legendary foes. I’m absolutely thrilled about it!
Primarily, the conflicts between these two warring groups have been portrayed on Earth in the live-action Transformers films. Therefore, witnessing their civil war transpire on their native planet promises an incredibly thrilling spectacle. Given that producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura once expressed his ambition for Transformers One to initiate a trilogy, this could make for an exciting journey to follow.
Okay, I Have To Talk About The Hilarious Mid Credits Sequence, Too
Before I wrap things up, I have to talk about the hilarious Transformers One mid-credits sequence where Bumblebee (Keegan-Michael Key) goes back down to Sub-Level 50 to check up on his “friends” and catch them up to speed on everything that’s happened since he left. It’s short, it’s sweet, and it involves the Autobot formerly known as B-127 accidentally cutting off the head of one of the non-moving robots he showed to Optimus Prime and Megatron earlier in the movie. And it’s so much fun.
Similar to many mid-series interludes in the past, this particular scene didn’t significantly advance the main storyline, but it showcased the side-splitting humor of the co-creator from Key & Peele once again.
It’s quite obvious that I’m eagerly anticipating what’s to come for the franchise after the closing scene of Transformers One. However, the exact timeline for the next chapter in Optimus Prime and Megatron’s tale remains unknown. But fear not, there are several thrilling science fiction films on the horizon to keep us entertained in the meantime.
