As a die-hard fan of both the Marvel and DC universes, I must say that Henry Cavill‘s cameo as the “Cavillrine” Wolverine in “Deadpool & Wolverine” was nothing short of brilliant! It was a testament to his versatility as an actor and his willingness to take on roles that challenge the norm.
In the film “Deadpool & Wolverine”, the speculation about Henry Cavill’s role was initially considered an extravagant cameo. However, it was later confirmed that Cavill, who was previously Superman, made a brief yet powerful appearance as a variant of Wolverine. This Wolverine was encountered by Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) during his mission to replace the superhero in his universe and prevent their timeline from being destroyed. Upon seeing Cavill’s physique, Deadpool approached the “Cavillrine” while he was working on his motorcycle, praising the variant and expressing that it felt right. However, the gruff and cigar-smoking Cavillrine promptly dismissed Deadpool, sending him back to his search for a suitable Wolverine across various universes.
As a gamer, I can’t help but share the excitement about how Superman himself, Henry Cavill, has joined the Marvel multiverse as one of the many iterations of the character previously brought to life by Hugh Jackman. In an exclusive chat with Variety, director Shawn Levy revealed the reason behind Cavill’s quick decision to take on the role.
Henry Cavill was ‘fabulous’ in his role despite the physical challenges
During an interview on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, director Shawn Levy disclosed additional information about Henry Cavill’s cameo in the movie, “Deadpool & Wolverine”. Levy mentioned that despite the challenging physical conditions, Cavill gave a commendable performance. In Levy’s words, “He was in great shape, and he kept a foul cigar in his mouth for long hours. He was fully committed to the role. I believe he might have felt nauseous if my memory serves correctly. It was a mix of bulging muscles and lack of real air reaching his nose, but he persevered and did an excellent job.”
Currently, Henry Cavill hasn’t shared many details about his character in the upcoming project known as Cavillrine. However, he did share an Instagram post that included a screenshot of his character with a witty nod to a past controversy from his time in the DC Extended Universe. His caption read, “For this one, I trimmed just the mustache.” This is a reference to the Superman mustache incident where Cavill, who was still sporting that mustache from filming “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” had his mustache digitally removed for “Justice League,” which resulted in less than ideal visual effects.
Ryan Reynolds likes the idea of Henry Cavill as Wolverine
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but ponder what might have been if Hugh Jackman decided not to reprise his iconic role as Wolverine in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The poignant end of “Logan” in 2017 felt like the final chapter for this beloved character, which made Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige hesitant about Jackman returning. In a world where Jackman chose to step away, would it have been appropriate to bring someone else into the fold? Perhaps a talented actor like Henry Cavill, given the strong connection fans have developed with Jackman over the years as Wolverine? This is just a thought experiment, but it’s fascinating to consider the possibilities.
In an interview with Collider, Ryan Reynolds openly acknowledged that finding a suitable actor to take over the role of Wolverine for Deadpool’s third movie would have been extremely challenging. If he were to replace Jackman with another actor, Cavill would have been an excellent fit for the part, according to him. “On the first day of shooting, I realized how tough it was – who on earth could we cast? The role of Wolverine is perhaps the most impossible and frustrating to recast,” said Reynolds. “As an actor, it would be daunting and intimidating. But if you had to do it and replace the man who’s defined the character both on and off-screen, Henry Cavill would make a good choice!”
