As a die-hard fan of the Marvel Universe and a longtime lover of all things *NSYNC, I must say that the opening dance sequence in “Deadpool & Wolverine” was nothing short of spectacular! The way they seamlessly integrated the classic tune “Bye Bye Bye” into the action was pure genius.
Viewers eagerly anticipating an amusing and disrespectful initial sequence for the summer blockbuster “Deadpool & Wolverine” – the latest addition to the “Deadpool” series, merging Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine character – were definitely not left wanting. As the credits unfold, Deadpool, portrayed again by Ryan Reynolds, imaginatively dispatches agents of the TVA (Time Variance Authority), but still manages to squeeze in a brief dance interlude… so, is Reynolds truly dancing in the scene?
No, he’s definitely not. The guy busting a move to *NSYNC’s classic pop song “Bye Bye Bye,” which soundtracks the scene, is named Nick Pauley, an actor and dancer who’s appeared in projects like “The Prom” and music videos for stars like Doja Cat, Katy Perry, and Nicki Minaj. Reynolds himself has praised Pauley pretty extensively; during a press conference attended by Business Insider, he gave all the credit to his dance double. “A guy named Nick Pauley is the guy that choreographed it,” Reynolds confessed. “I mean, he’s doing a lot of the moves that have been established previously by *NSYNC. If it looks like the person who’s dancing doesn’t have arthritis, that’s him.”

Later, he playfully compared his dance abilities to a pop and lock move, but emphasized that the ‘pop’ was more like an emphatic crack, not just a subtle sound. As for Pauley, he praised his skills, promising to place his hat on them as a testament to his talent and acknowledgement of his valuable contributions.
Nick Pauley was thrilled to be a part of Deadpool & Wolverine —
It’s evident that Ryan Reynolds admired Nick Pauley’s exceptional dance moves, which mirrored the authentic choreography from the “Bye Bye Bye” music video. On his own Instagram, Reynolds complimented both Pauley and the project, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to portray a Deadpool character he called “Dancepool.”

As a die-hard fan who couldn’t contain my excitement any longer, I proudly unveiled my role in the movie “Deadpool and Wolverine” through an Instagram post on July 26, the very same day it hit theaters. I shared a picture of myself dressed in the iconic Deadpool suit, introducing myself as none other than Dancepool! The cat was finally out of the bag, and I couldn’t suppress my joy! I had the incredible opportunity to stand in for Ryan Reynolds during the opening scene of the entire film!
Fans absolutely loved the opening sequence of Deadpool & Wolverine … especially Nick Pauley’s dance moves
On X, previously known as Twitter, fans expressed their admiration for Nick Pauley’s work, stating that it was extremely well-received. User @jordnjnes exclaimed, “I can’t wait for the official version of Deadpool’s ‘Bye Bye Bye’ dance. Ever since last Thursday, I’ve been playing it on repeat and can’t seem to get enough. I still don’t comprehend how an opening scene for a film can be this amazing.” @MrDrewLandry echoed this sentiment, commending the use of the 2000 hit song in the movie, saying, “Regardless of opinions about ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, bringing ‘Bye Bye Bye’ back into popular culture is a positive contribution to society.” @MarioEmmet heaped praise on the sequence, comparing it to another iconic MCU opener, stating, “The opening scene of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ was fantastic. The song (Bye, Bye, Bye) has been stuck in my head since then. It reminds me of the opening to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, which is still the best opening to an MCU film.” To recall, “Guardians of the Galaxy” starts with Peter Quill dancing to Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love”.
Some viewers remained fond of the sequence yet criticized the movie for revisiting the past, as expressed by @FrieNDA_2: “I dislike how [‘Deadpool & Wolverine’] is making me groove to Bye Bye Bye once more, just like I was back in elementary school.” The most positive recommendation came from the official *NSYNC YouTube channel, though; the title of their original music video now includes a note that reads “Official Video for ‘Deadpool and Wolverine'”.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is in theaters now.
