As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for superhero series and a soft spot for the morally ambiguous, I find myself utterly captivated by the intricate web of power plays unfolding in The Boys Season 4. Sister Sage, a character whose intellect outshines even the brightest stars, has proven to be a formidable force to reckon with.
In my perspective as a devoted fan, the climax of Season 4 for “The Boys” promises to be a thrilling culmination. Homelander emerges victorious, having effectively manipulated the government into submission. However, his victory doesn’t signal an end to his ambitions; he and Sister Sage still have much in store.
Since childhood, Sister Sage has exhibited extraordinarily high intelligence, with her cognitive abilities growing at an exceptional rate. To manage this, she undergoes frontal lobotomies periodically. Despite not necessarily considering supes superior to humans, such as Homelander, they both have faced unfair prejudice from them and seek retribution. In the finale’s closing moments, Sage advises Homelander to brace himself for “Phase 2.” This statement could imply her continued loyalty in expanding Homelander’s influence or it may hint at a larger plan aimed at dismantling his entire scheme altogether.
Sister Sage’s Plans So Far in The Boys
To generate backing for Homelander’s political bid, Sage intentionally sparked conflict against Starlight and her followers. Since The Seven had slain three of Homelander’s devoted supporters, Sage manipulated the scenario to make it seem like they perished in a riot ignited by Starlight’s devotees. This allowed the public to dislike Starlight and empathize with Homelander. Moreover, she intensified the rift between Starlight and Firecracker, exacerbating their animosity further.
In a shocking turn of events, Firecracker publicly reveals a hidden truth about Starlight during a live broadcast, leading to Starlight’s aggressive reaction in front of the entire audience. Sage then cleverly presents Firecracker as an aggrieved party due to Starlight’s actions, which only increased sympathy for her cause. This demonstrates Sage’s intelligence: manipulating media to sway public opinion is a tactic often employed by groups aiming to gain power, a strategy reminiscent of fascist movements.
In an effort to outsmart The Seven, The Boys enlisted A-Train as a secret informant to gather intel on their strategies. At first, it seemed like Sage couldn’t detect the spy among them. However, in truth, she was well aware of A-Train’s double agent role and kept him close to manage what he found out. This allowed her to control what The Boys learned as well.
What the Future May Hold in The Boys Season 5
It’s speculated that the enigmatic “Phase 2” could unfold in two different scenarios. One of them suggests that Sister Sage might collaborate with Homelander to propagate his supremacist ideology among superhumans globally, given their power-obsessed nature. Their goal is to brainwash as many supers as possible into accepting their ideology, making it increasingly difficult for those who oppose them to evade them. With Victoria Neuman deceased and the President allegedly under Homelander’s control, it seems likely that Vought sympathizers will be compelled to leave the country, potentially facing persecution.
Sage might be planning strategies to manipulate foreign governments, similar to how she controlled the U.S., possibly by labeling their adversaries as global criminals. If other nations treat anti-super refugees in a manner akin to how the U.S. did, it provides an opportunity for The Seven’s supremacist beliefs to proliferate worldwide.
The other possible route of “Phase 2” could be the reveal that Sister Sage was using Homelander and The Seven in her own master plan. Her influence on the team has made them stronger than they ever were without her. Who’s to say she can’t take it all away just as quickly?
In Season 4, it appears that everything Sage did was merely a test to see how far she could go without being caught. This implies that she has been orchestrating a grand scheme that was larger than what Homelander or anyone else had suspected. The incidents involving A-Train and Singer serve as evidence, showcasing her nonchalance about concealing her intentions and using her comrades as mere pieces on a chessboard. Season 5 of The Boys could potentially portray Sage as an even more sinister villain than Homelander, perhaps even turning his own strategies against him.
