What Squid Game Season 2’s Post-Credits Scene Could Mean For Season 3

As a fan who has binged through both seasons of “Squid Game” in one sitting, I can confidently say that Season 2 left me with a mix of emotions – satisfaction, sadness, and an insatiable hunger for more. The post-credit scene was a cherry on top; it not only hints at another round of games but also raises intriguing questions about the possible international scope of this deadly competition.

Contains spoilers for “Squid Game” Season 2

After the phenomenal success of “Squid Game,” fans were eager for more stories, and Season 2 certainly doesn’t disappoint. Our protagonist, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), is once again drawn into the games, with the iconic Red Light, Green Light returning alongside a fresh batch of gruesome children’s games. However, unlike the first season, “Squid Game” Season 2 takes an unexpected turn in its final episode titled “Friend or Foe,” as a rebellion erupts among the players. Regrettably, this uprising only results in additional deaths, including that of the endearing Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan). Gi-hun is captured, leaving us on a cliffhanger with the credits rolling before his fate is revealed. But don’t go anywhere just yet, as there’s an intriguing post-credits scene hinting at another round of violence.

In this unique twist, three characters (096, 100, and 353) make their entrance into the Red Light, Green Light game area, unlike our previous games. They’re not stepping out in front of the giant girl doll as usual; instead, they’re appearing behind her. But there’s more to this scene – a giant boy doll is also present on the field. And instead of a human calling “Green light,” we see a green train signal light up.

Given how violent the Red Light, Green Light games have been in the series “Squid Game”, it’s logical to expect that this game might reappear again during the mid-credits scene of Season 2. Although we don’t know what will happen to Gi-hun next, the additional scene does suggest that there are more games awaiting us, so be prepared for more violence as a third season is officially confirmed to release sometime in 2025.

Squid Game Season 2’s post-credit scene shows the games aren’t over yet

Since Gi-hun survives at the end of “Squid Game” Season 2, it’s clear that his storyline isn’t fully resolved. This could suggest that additional games may be in store for him down the line. After the uprising, the Mastermind might choose to restart these games anew, potentially leading to another rendition of Red Light, Green Light – but with an unexpected twist this time around.

In Season 2, when the new adversaries play Red Light, Green Light, Gi-hun guides as many individuals as he can to safety. He advises them to arrange themselves in a single line, making it difficult for the doll to detect any movement if someone is behind another person. This tactic may have upset the Front Man, leading him to introduce another doll (the boy statue) to observe if anyone breaks the line this time. Restarting an entirely new game could be an effective way to torment Gi-hun, as he watches the chaos unfold again from the beginning.

That also assumes the girl statue is from the same location. An intriguing “Squid Game” theory from the first season suggests this event could be an international affair. There’s a chance Season 3 could allow us to explore how other countries conduct their games. One place could have two dolls for Red Light, Green Light instead of just the one that’s present in South Korea. This would make further sense since the ceiling in the mid-credit scene looks different from what we’ve seen previously in Red Light, Green Light. But this is all speculation, and we’ll just have to wait until “Squid Game” Season 3 comes out to learn the truth behind this new wrinkle.

“Squid Game” Season 2 is now available on Netflix.
