As a gamer and avid Star Trek fan, I’ve always held Robert Beltran’s portrayal of Chakotay in high regard. His character’s complex background and the way he handled the dual roles on Voyager were truly captivating. It’s fascinating to think that Beltran landed the role without prior Star Trek knowledge, which just goes to show how talented he is as an actor.
One of the main characters in “Star Trek: Voyager” is Chakotay, played by Robert Beltran. He is a complex individual who holds the position of first officer under Captain Janeway, portrayed by Kate Mulgrew.
In the “Star Trek: Voyager” series, Chakotay is a Starfleet officer whose ship gets stranded in the Delta Quadrant, similar to Voyager. Before joining Captain Janeway’s crew, he rises through the ranks of the Maquis resistance movement as a high-ranking member. Balancing two distinct roles, Chakotay acts as both the Maquis leader and Starfleet officer Second-in-Command on Voyager. Unfortunately, the Maquis rebellion is left unresolved in the show’s plotlines, leading to most of its members being assimilated into Voyager’s crew. Despite this unexpected turn of events, Chakotay excels in his new role as Janeway’s second-in-command. His blend of ethical principles and practical survival skills proves invaluable to the voyaging team during their journeys through uncharted territory.
Remarkably, Beltran secured the part of Chakotay in “Star Trek: Voyager” despite being unfamiliar with the “Star Trek” universe. Over the course of 168 episodes, he became a prominent figure on the show when it aired from 1995 to 2001. Post-“Voyager,” Beltran continued his acting career by taking on various projects. Here’s what he looks like now and an update on his activities since then.
What Robert Beltran has been doing after Voyager
Since leaving “Star Trek: Voyager,” Robert Beltran has had an intermittent acting career, primarily taking on minor guest appearances in television shows and TV movies. He also partakes in theater performances on occasion. Notably, he gained recognition for his recurring role as Jerry Flute in the HBO series “Big Love.”
Beltran has rejoined the “Star Trek” universe and resumed his famous part, notably providing the voice for Chakotay in the animated show “Star Trek: Prodigy.” However, he declined an opportunity to reenact a contentious storyline featuring a romantic relationship between Chakotay and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), which was previously explored on “Star Trek: Picard,” despite being asked to revive the character for Paramount+.
As a gamer, I shared my experience of being approached with two episode offers for Picard, but I couldn’t get on board with how they planned to portray Chakotay. So, I declined. I want to clarify that I hold no grudge against the Picard team. Instead, I’m thrilled about the version of Chakotas Star Trek: Prodigy has in store for me. Matalas later disclosed that the rejected storyline would have introduced an antagonistic alternate-universe Chakotay.
