As a long-time fan of the Transformers franchise, I must say that the potential for a spin-off television series based on Transformers One is nothing short of exhilarating! Growing up with these characters, I’ve always been fascinated by their rich history and the intricate dynamics between Autobots and Decepticons.
This article contains spoilers for Transformers One
The long-awaited Transformers One has finally hit theaters and is being hailed by many as the finest Transformers movie yet. This animated flick delves into the tale of how Optimus Prime and Megatron transitioned from inseparable pals to sworn adversaries. By returning to its animated origins, this film offers a lively tribute for long-time franchise enthusiasts on the occasion of the franchise’s 40th anniversary, while simultaneously serving as an inviting introduction for a fresh wave of young fans. With family-friendly appeal, it seems poised to be a blockbuster success over the upcoming weeks, setting the stage for an enjoyable holiday season.
Similar to numerous high-profile film adaptations based on established franchises, Transformers One subtly hints at potential follow-ups. This is often achieved through post-credit scenes, and Transformers One follows suit. Intriguingly, it features not one, but two post-credit sequences. If you’re thinking about watching it, remember to stay until the very end. Here’s a summary of the events in both post-credit scenes of Transformers One, and how they pave the way for the next installment in the series, potentially even an animated spin-off.
Transformers One Features Two After-Credits Scenes
The Second Is Far More Important, Though
In the mid-credits, there’s a humorous scene where B-127 (also known as Bumblebee) returns to his storage area on level 50 and interacts with his collection of junk he affectionately named. In an effort to impress these inanimate objects, he demonstrates his newfound abilities, such as his sword-like hands that he discovered during combat. However, in the excitement of showing off, he ends up accidentally beheading them, causing a panic. This scene is a clever callback to a funnier moment earlier in the movie and adds a touch of humor after the more serious ending of Transformers One.
In the second sequence, which unfolds following the conclusion of the movie, is the more captivating part. After Optimus Prime expels Megatron during their intense confrontation, Megatron assures Optimus that this is not the end. He and his former High Guard members such as Starscream, Soundwave, and Shockwave depart at this point, but they are not seen again in the main storyline of Transformers One. The movie concludes with Optimus Prime delivering a grand heroic address, organizing the Autobots, revealing the origin of their team name, and explaining how he reinstated the ability for Cybertronians to transform.
In a thrilling twist at the end of the credits, it’s clear that our old nemesis, Megatron, isn’t done yet. He marks his chest with the visage of Megatronus Prime, the fallen hero who gave him his name, and the symbol that would later become the Decepticon emblem. In a rousing speech to the remnants of the High Guard, Megatron sets the stage for our next adversary, Optimus Prime. “They’ve been deceived,” he says, “but no more.” This revelation explains their moniker, the Decepticons.
Transformers One Sets Up Franchise Status Quo for a Sequel
What makes Transformers One intriguing is its departure from the usual patterns common in the franchise. Instead of the standard Autobots versus Decepticons conflict, which has been a mainstay in the series since the 1984 animated series and subsequent live-action films, the initial part of Transformers One does not introduce the familiar Autobots and Decepticons until late in the movie. Instead, the film delves into the events that sparked the creation of these two factions.
In simpler terms, the producers of Transformers One marketed the movie as a prequel to the live-action films, however, several aspects of the storyline contradict established facts about Sentinel Prime’s fate, the Matrix of Leadership, and Megatronus’ status. While it is possible to interpret Transformers One as a prequel to the 1984 animated series, doing so would require some creative thinking to reconcile the inconsistencies.
It appears that Transformers One has laid a foundation for a sequel, which follows the typical plotline of the series by featuring Optimus Prime’s Autobots working to prevent Megatron and his Decepticons from dominating Earth. Additionally, both sides must grapple with the ongoing threat of the Quintessons.
In the world of Transformers, most stories take place on Earth, but they usually unfold after centuries of war on Cybertron. There’s a lot more to uncover about this initial conflict, especially regarding Megatron’s future actions. Specifically, what will be Megatron’s next move following his desire to overthrow the old order on Cybertron, which he sees as being upheld by Optimus Prime? In the original series, Megatron aspired to rule the entire universe, but in Transformers One, he is portrayed more as a revolutionary aiming to free Cybertron from its outdated systems. Megatron sees the current system as rotten and wants to destroy it all, while Optimus Prime believes they can create a better future by learning from their mistakes. This ideological struggle is intriguing, but a sequel would need something more captivating than just “Autobots vs Decepticons” to attract a wider audience.
Is Paramount Going to Make a Television Spin-Off?
There’s a possibility that the story of Transformers One may continue in a new TV series, which would be an extension of the movie’s main plotline. Much like how Paramount has bridged the gap between the 2023 film “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and its 2026 sequel with “Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” the Transformers One series could follow a similar path, delving deeper into each character between Transformers One and a potential sequel.
Instead of focusing solely on Bumblebee and Elita-1 who could have their own storylines expanded, it’s intriguing to delve into secondary characters like Starscream, Soundwave, and Shockwave from Megatron’s faction in the film. This would offer a richer perspective on the Decepticon group and provide more screen time for these beloved characters who were somewhat underutilized. Additionally, an animated series could introduce or reintroduce fan-favorite characters hinted at in “Transformers One,” such as Jazz, Arcee, and Ratchet, or even create new favorites like Ultra Magnus, Ironhide, and Mirage.
For over a decade, a total of thirteen distinct Transformers series have graced our screens. This franchise has been a significant focus for Hasbro, and Paramount has reaped substantial rewards from it. At present, Transformers: EarthSpark is streaming on Paramount+. If Paramount+ were to introduce an animated series titled Transformers One, they might consider canceling the current one since having two competing Transformers series could be counterproductive. Given that Transformers: EarthSpark is nearing the end of its initial run, a new season or perhaps even a spin-off series, Transformers One, could potentially arise – especially if it performs well at the box office. A sequel for Transformers One seems more likely in this scenario.
