As a dedicated fan who’s been following the hilarious escapades of the undead since the series premiere, I can wholeheartedly attest that Matt Berry’s impeccable comic timing and unparalleled talent have made “What We Do in the Shadows” an absolute joy to behold. The fact that this FX gem is on the verge of wrapping up after six seasons leaves me with a bittersweet feeling, akin to being invited to a lavish vampire’s ball only to find out it’s a one-time-only event.
It was unforeseen in 2014 that Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s horror-comedy “What We Do in the Shadows” would lead to numerous spinoffs and eventually bring UK comedy sensation Matt Berry the recognition he merits in the U.S. Now, a decade later, FX’s vampire mockumentary series is almost ready to potentially air the bloodiest series finale of any 2024 TV lineup. As viewers like myself aren’t prepared to bid farewell, the same can’t be said for Berry himself.
Despite numerous other hit TV shows in the genres of mockumentaries and horror-comedies throughout history, “What We Do in the Shadows” remains uniquely distinct on television. When it eventually ends, we’ll find its absence hard to fill. Perhaps solace can be found in Berry’s intention to move on from the series, as he aims to preserve its exceptional quality without succumbing to mediocrity. In an interview with Salon, Berry expressed this sentiment:
Overdoing comedy can lead to an unwelcome stay, which may cause audiences to grow tired and potentially view your work unfavorably. On the other hand, ending at the appropriate moment ensures that your work is well-regarded and remembered positively for its quality.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but recall a highly acclaimed series that has been running for quite some time past its peak, with the iconic mockumentary “The Office” springing to mind. However, shows such as “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” have demonstrated that maintaining a top-notch status quo is possible even after 15+ seasons. If “Shadows” were still airing in 2034, I firmly believe it would continue to be just as hilarious and innovative. Alas, it’s a hypothetical scenario.
Berry went on expressing his hope that others feel the same as him regarding the FX series maintaining its high-quality standard throughout all six seasons, which he believes it did. In simpler terms, he thinks the series lived up to expectations and he hopes others agree with him.
A six-season run is quite a stretch. Here’s hoping the audience appreciates each season and doesn’t feel that the show has lost its original charm or fallen short in comparison. Instead, the aim is for every season to maintain a consistent level of quality.
Initially, the first season encounters similar challenges as other shows in establishing its characters and humor, but it doesn’t take long before Laszlo & Co. smoothly transition into a hilarious comedy ensemble. (Although there might be more gore and internal organs rather than oil, you get the idea.) As the vampire lore and history unfold, and Kristen Schaal joins in with her side-splitting portrayal as The Guide, Shadows is operating at full speed.

What We Do In The Shadows: What To Watch Next If You Like The FX Comedy Series
Regarding Matt Berry, his humor continues to leave me gasping for breath, just as it did during his early days on “Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace” and “Snuff Box”. Given his presence in “What We Do in the Shadows”, a dip in quality is virtually unthinkable. However, we might reluctantly concede that it could transform into a bat and fly off at some point soon.
The veterinarian from “Toast of London” isn’t leaving permanently, but you’ll still hear Matt Berry’s soothing voice in the cast of the upcoming “Cat in the Hat” movie led by Bill Hader. Additionally, his voice will be featured in both the animated version of “The Minecraft Movie” and Duncan Jones’ sci-fi animation, “Rogue Trooper”.
First off, let me clarify that he’ll be wrapping up Laszlo’s tale when What We Do in the Shadows is broadcast every Monday night on FX at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The following day, episodes can be streamed if you have a Hulu subscription.
