As a long-time connoisseur of the silver screen and a self-proclaimed aficionado of all things humorous, I must say that Matt Berry’s performance in What We Do in the Shadows is nothing short of a revelation. The man’s ability to breathe life into the eccentric Laszlo Cravensworth is nothing short of extraordinary. And let me tell you, dear reader, I’ve seen my fair share of vampires on television, from Buffy’s Angel to Dracula himself, but none have left me quite as entertained as this hapless, yet endearing, bloodsucker.
In anticipation for the final season of FX’s popular vampire comedy series, What We Do in the Shadows, the cast is spilling their comedic tricks to the public, including Matt Berry’s famous line performances. For each episode of WWDITS, you can find a plethora of videos online showcasing Berry delivering lines using various accents, ranging from posh English to slightly less posh English, and even faking a posh English accent pretending to be from Tucson, Arizona. Despite the fact that Berry’s inflections and pronunciations have become an integral part of his character (Laszlo Cravensworth), the actor admits that he only does them for his own amusement.
Matt Berry recently chatted with Variety about the last season of “What We Do in the Shadows”. During the interview, they discussed his distinctive speech pattern and peculiar line deliveries throughout the series. Laszlo’s character has gained viral popularity online through many catchphrases, such as “You’re the most cunning scoundrel in New York Cityyyy!” The actor admitted that these unconventional deliveries were not initially intended for his character and were only done to entertain himself while filming. In fact, all of Laszlo’s lines in What We Do in the Shadows are improvised, even Matt Berry doesn’t always know when he will use them. He explained:
“I did it for my own amusement and I’m still doing it for that same reason. When I start something, there’s no set plan or schedule; it could happen at any moment and I never know which idea might take flight. Whatever emerges will be spontaneous and unforced, but the result might seem awkward or strange.”
Matt Berry Breaks Down Why What We Do in the Shadows Works So Well
In contrast to many TV series that feature characters undergoing growth and transformation over season-long arcs, the show “What We Do in the Shadows” stands out due to its static characters as per Matt Berry’s perspective. Unlike detective Sherlock Holmes who doesn’t change much, the trio of vampires – Laszlo, Nadia (Natasia Demetriou), and Nandor (Kayvan Novak) – remain largely unchanged across the series’ five (soon to be six) seasons. This is not because they are flawless but rather due to their inflexible adherence to their established habits. Berry explains this by stating that they refuse to adapt or grow.
Among the few series, other than “The Munsters” or similar ones, is one where the characters are already well-established, without requiring much growth beyond perhaps Gizmo’s character development. Interestingly, the depicted vampires in this show maintain strict adherence to their traditional ways.
The sixth and final season of the television spin-off from Taika Waititi’s indie comedy film titled “What We Do in the Shadows,” which premiered in 2019, is approaching its end. This critically acclaimed comedy series has earned one Primetime Emmy award and received nominations for eight awards during its fifth season, including a nomination for Matt Berry as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. As the show winds down, the character Laszlo Cravensworth transforms into an overly self-absorbed scientist. However, it’s important to note that Laszlo was turned into a vampire during the Victorian era, which means his scientific knowledge is quite outdated.
The sixth season of “What We Do in the Shadows” is set to air on FX starting October 2, 2024. If you’d like to catch up, the first five seasons are available for streaming on Hulu.
