Whatever Happened To Phoenix Jones: The Real-Life Superhero-Turned-Villain?

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the virtual world of superheroes, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think about Phoenix Jones, the real-life superhero from Seattle. His story was one that captivated us all – a self-proclaimed guardian who fought crime and became a media sensation.

In 2009, Seattle residents got an unexpected superhero: A genuine one. The figure known as Phoenix Jones, dressed in a ’90s-style black-and-gold outfit, quickly gained media attention. This self-styled protector of Seattle spent years combating crime, earning credit for apprehending car thieves, preventing brawls, and even stopping potential stabbings. He was even rumored to have disrupted a possible terrorist plot at one point. However, the vigilante’s actions took a turn when he was arrested in January 2020 for accusations of selling drugs to undercover police officers. Since then, he hasn’t been spotted in his costume again.

It’s not the first time Jones has found himself embroiled in legal issues; back in 2011, he was apprehended during an investigation into an assault and was compelled to reveal his identity as former MMA fighter Ben Fodor, though no charges were brought against him. However, his arrest in 2020 appears to be a more intricate situation. The allegations of selling MDMA to undercover officers and the discovery of four extra grams of cocaine at the scene have left many curious about what transpired with this self-proclaimed hero. In truth, there are more questions than answers, as Jones seems to embody a superhero one might prefer not to encounter in reality.

In an interview with The Guardian in 2022, David Weinberg, host of “The Superhero Complex” podcast, discussed Jones who, despite being on felony probation due to his 2020 arrest, has persisted in working for the well-being of Emerald City.

Ben Fodor has mostly retired as Phoenix Jones

Whatever Happened To Phoenix Jones: The Real-Life Superhero-Turned-Villain?

Before his 2020 arrest, Phoenix Jones had largely stepped away from his superhero activities. Previously, as an essential part of the Rain City Superhero Movement until its disbandment in 2014, Jones sparked a wave of imitators during the 2010s. Intriguingly, he attended the premiere of James Gunn’s “Super,” a movie about an ordinary man (Rainn Wilson from “The Office”) who transforms into a genuine superhero. However, as his actions became increasingly contentious, the vigilante began to question whether he was making the positive impact he once aspired for.

In an interview with “NW Nerd Podcast” in 2019, Ben Fodor, without his costume, admitted he had ended his superhero phase due to disappointment over the lack of positive impact from his years of effort. As he put it, “The idea was that people who saw (a superhero) would stop acting this way. But we didn’t learn that lesson at all. We see the shootings, stabbings, and bullets. It wasn’t worth it, no one understood.” Subsequently, Phoenix Jones retreated from public view until approximately a year later when Fodor was apprehended by authorities.

But perhaps the former vigilante’s arrest was also a wake-up call. Since his last arrest, Fodor has jumped back into action on a limited basis. This mostly just includes tracking down stolen cars, which he’s posted about as recently as September 2023 on his Instagram, but the former hero can be seen occasionally back in his old costume, still known as Phoenix Jones but operating without the mask.
