As a long-time comic book fan who has seen more than my fair share of Marvel universes unravel and reassemble, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation when it comes to Marvel Rivals. The reveal of the HYDRA base map has only added fuel to the fire of anticipation, with its hints at ancient secrets and otherworldly beings lurking beneath the icy fortress.
The upcoming game, Marvel Rivals, is scheduled for release next week. However, there are still some crucial details about the game that have not been disclosed as of now. What we do know is that at its launch, it will feature a total of 33 characters and 8 different maps to explore.
Fresh off the press, NetEase Games unveiled a novel layout for a HYDRA hideout, and it’s intriguing to note that there might be an enormous secret hidden within its walls.
The Monster in the HYDRA Base
Slip into HYDRA’s secret stronghold, the Charteris Base, nestled within the snowy expanse of Antarctica. And here it is, the official unveiling:
Although the map reveals typical elements found in a classic comic book villain’s hideout, it subtly suggests the type of scientific research or activities the imagined terrorists have been conducting within their compound. The text hints at these experiments without explicitly stating them.
After lying dormant for several decades, Hydra has concealed its sinister intentions amidst the turmoil of the present. However, as order disintegrates, this chaos could pave the way for a new, ominous chapter in the history of this nefarious group.
Deep within Charteris Base in Antarctica, Hydra has stirred an entrance to a divine realm from another world, and the means to unlock it is a crystal infused with chronal energy. As the ancient Hive draws near from beyond, Hydra intends to harness its power to create a new legion of super-soldiers.
Who is Marvel’s Hive?
In the year 2009, the character Hive first appeared in the comic series “Secret Warriors.” Similar to Captain America, Hive was developed as an experimental super soldier by HYDRA, designed to embody their principles. However, unlike a single entity, Hive is actually a fusion of multiple parasites. Much like Venom, it has the ability to seize control of a host and exploit their unique traits.
Because Hive embodies multiple entities within it, it represents the ‘multiple heads’ of the legendary Hydra individually, and certain forms of it have the ability to inhabit other beings.
Is Rivals’ Hive any Different?
According to the given description, it appears that the character Hive in Marvel Rivals won’t be an experimental soldier but instead an ancient entity that HYDRA has been attempting to summon. While earlier manifestations of HYDRA were symbolized by a skull with tentacles, this particular version of HYDRA features Hive’s face on its emblem, suggesting a possibly distinct origin for this specific timeline.
There’s some uncertainty about whether the Hive will appear on the map, but it’s quite conceivable that its tentacles could serve as a dangerous environmental obstacle for players to navigate around. It’s possible that NetEase is considering utilizing the Hive for Player vs Environment (PvE) missions as well.
Do We Have Our 8 Locations?
After unveiling the HYDRA Base, we now have access to six out of the eight promised maps. Since Yggsgard and Tokyo 2099 both have two maps apiece, it’s reasonable to assume that the newly disclosed Birnin T’Challa map (Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda) and the HYDRA base will also feature two separate locations each. This would bring us up to the total of 8 maps distributed across 4 primary storylines.
As more characters are set to be unveiled, NetEase faces a challenging act of maintaining a balance in the lead-up to the game’s release. Given the less than impressive Marvel productions like Avengers: A-Day, fans eagerly anticipate that this video game will prove to be the triumphant victory Marvel has been striving for.
Marvel Rivals launches for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on Dec. 6.
