As a long-time movie enthusiast who has seen their fair share of rom-coms and action flicks, I can’t help but feel a tad let down by the recent trend of withholding kissing scenes in movies like The Union and Twisters. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate a good build-up and am all for leaving room for future installments, but sometimes a little lip-lock at the end can make all the difference.
2024 sees Netflix’s action-comedy “The Union” making its way onto screens, amidst a summer of excitement, drama, and romantic intrigue – at least, that’s what the trailers suggest. However, viewers might find themselves feeling let down when they realize that the romantic tension between leads Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry doesn’t culminate in a passionate kiss, much like in the recent release “Twisters.” This seems to be a recurring trend in modern movies, leaving audiences wondering why these films are choosing to omit such scenes.
As a movie enthusiast, I find it intriguing that the creative minds behind two blockbuster films decided to skip the classic love scenes in their latest productions. In the case of “The Union,” director Julian Farino clarified this choice during an interview with Variety. It seems his decision was primarily driven by a single factor – potential, hinting at something more exciting and unexpected to come.
We’re developing the storyline for a specific location, and I believe there should be plenty of room for it to grow and unfold. Netflix initially suggested this could potentially span three movies. If viewers are left yearning for a romantic moment, then we’ve likely succeeded, as far as I’m concerned.
Often, production companies strategize long-term with their intellectual properties, and Netflix has made attempts to turn its films into franchises, achieving some level of success. For instance, viewers might expect a romantic moment in a film like Julian Farino’s, which could potentially generate anticipation for future installments. However, I believe that relying solely on audience expectation for a kiss is insufficient to secure funding for a sequel.
Absolutely, we’re talking about a business here, and production companies are constantly seeking means to engage audiences. In this case, the cast members of “The Union” concurred with their director’s reasoning, as expressed by Halle Berry:
After their first kiss, it appears their story has reached its conclusion. Yet, there’s hope for another chance, where they can prolong the pursuit. If you’d like to follow along, you’ll get to witness the unfolding tale – these two former high school sweethearts reconnecting.
It appears that the creators behind the film believe there is more story to explore, and they intentionally left an airport kiss between Glen Powell’s character Tyler Owens and Daisy Edgar-Jones’ character Kate Carter out in order to leave viewers wanting more. This scene was suggested by Steven Spielberg, who acted as an executive producer on the movie. Additionally, a cameo from Powell’s dog, Brisket, was also planned but not included in the final cut of the film.
It remains uncertain whether we’ll see follow-ups for either “Twisters” or “The Union.” Regarding the implications this may have on the rekindled relationship between high school sweethearts Mike and Roxanne, Mike Wahlberg hinted at potential storylines.
As a gamer, if we manage to progress further, it feels like there’s so much more than just a simple victory at stake. But then again, only time will tell as the game unfolds and the story unfurls.
Despite the fact that the lead-up to those absent kisses is skillfully handled, it’s hard not to feel let down without the expected climax in this movie. (These actors are truly top-notch!) However, I must confess my secret desire: I want those two attractive characters to finally lock lips at the end of the film. Is that too much to expect? Particularly when the actor from “Arthur The King” is looking as handsome as ever at 53! Mark Wahlberg, who maintains his fitness with regular gym workouts, certainly seems to never skip a day at the gym. Unfortunately, until there’s news of sequels, I guess I’ll just have to re-watch these films and keep my fingers crossed for more in the future.
Twisters is still spinning in theaters and you can stream The Union now with a Netflix subscription.
