Over the last few years, Scottie Pippen has been candidly expressing his thoughts about his old teammate Michael Jordan. After expressing dissatisfaction with ESPN’s “The Last Dance”, Pippen hasn’t sugarcoated his opinions about Jordan. In a recent interview, he stated that even if he hadn’t played alongside MJ, he would still have won six championships. This assertion caught the attention of Draymond Green, who also shared his perspective without pulling any punches as a veteran player with the Golden State Warriors.
In a chat with Valuetainment Media’s Patrick Bet-David, Scottie Pippen discussed various subjects. During the conversation, Bet-David hypothetically asked how successful Pippen might have been if he was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks instead of the Chicago Bulls in 1987. In response, Pippen said he would still have achieved six championships, and later suggested that Michael Jordan could still win two or three titles without him. The interview has since gained widespread attention on YouTube.
Following the incident, Draymond Green learned about the Hall of Famer’s opinions and responded on his own sports talk show – “The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis.” Green, who confessed to being a fan of the ’90s Bulls teams, appeared somewhat unimpressed by the remarks made by the well-respected, former small forward.
There seems to be some issue with Scottie, friend. It’s important we look into it, friend. I’ve always admired him, growing up watching those Bulls teams. I’m a huge fan of Scottie Pippen. I can’t help but wonder what he’s going through right now, but I want to express my support for him. … When you begin making comments like Scottie has been recently, people tend to recall those comments more than remembering you as Scottie Pippen, and that’s not something I prefer, you understand? People try to diminish your identity and achievements due to the recent comments, and I don’t want to see that happening to Scottie, because Scottie is certainly one of a kind.
In my critique of “The Last Dance” in 2021, I, Scottie Pippen, expressed my displeasure through my memoir, “Unguarded.” In it, I accused Michael Jordan of “ruining” the game of basketball and even went so far as to label him a “horrible” player. During our latest interview, I reiterated that he and I were never close friends, despite his significant influence on the game. Draymond Green addressed these comments during his show and attempted to provide some context for them.
He expressed that Michael Jordan and him have never shared a meal together, which seems to be coming from a place of unfulfilled expectation or longing, if you catch my drift. It appears he felt Michael Jordan might not have shown him the affection he expected, and instead of directly expressing his feelings, he’s expressing it indirectly through this statement. In essence, he’s yearning for something that he can’t quite articulate and is hoping to convey it in this manner. Perhaps someone could arrange a meeting between Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.
Scottie Pippen’s remarks about his former teammate have sparked criticism from several veteran NBA players. In 2021, Charles Barkley retorted to Pippen’s initial comments about Michael Jordan and accused him of “hunting for big game” in order to promote his book. The late Jerry West also responded to the alleged negative remarks. West, who considered Pippen a great player, found it puzzling that the NBA champion would criticize the founder of the Jordan Brand.
Fans of basketball are bound to keep discussing if “Pip” could have retained his title as a six-time champion without his longstanding court companion. Meanwhile, I find myself wondering if the seven-time All-Star will reveal additional insights into his working relationship with Michael Jordan.
