Warning: Includes MASSIVE SPOILERS for The Wheel of Time book series!
The cancellation of Amazon’s “The Wheel of Time” implies that numerous key plotlines will remain incomplete. This fantasy series, adapted from Robert Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” novels, is a fifteen-book sequence teeming with thousands of characters and varying viewpoints. Consequently, there’s an abundance of lore to delve into beyond the television show. Regrettably, Prime Video’s adaptation mainly focused on just three out of the fifteen books, leaving several characters hanging in suspenseful cliffhangers.
In season 3 finale of The Wheel of Time, Rand’s destiny as the Dragon Reborn was emphasized as he declared himself Car’a’carn in front of the Aiel clans. This prophecy suggests that the Aiel are crucial allies to him, and with their support, the grand saga outlined in Robert Jordan’s books was on the verge of unfolding. Besides Rand, there were other key characters whose stories were left unfinished due to Amazon’s decision to cancel The Wheel of Time series.
8. Rand al’Thor’s Internal Conflict With The One Power
The Dark One’s Touch Was Just Beginning To Show
Rand al’Thor is foretold as the Dragon Reborn, but being a prophesied hero in “The Wheel of Time” isn’t an easy task at all. In fact, much of Robert Jordan’s masterful storytelling revolves around the colossal challenge of power, as Rand grapples with his destiny throughout most of the series. The male aspect of the One Power is corrupted by the Dark One, and season 3 delves into Rand’s struggle to keep it under control.
In the epic saga of “The Wheel of Time”, Rand’s identity as the Dragon is unveiled fairly promptly, yet the narrative isn’t primarily concerned with discovering who the Dragon is, but rather understanding what part the Dragon will play in the Last Battle. Moiraine is on a mission to guide Rand towards this battlefield as a champion of light, but other entities, such as the Dark One, aim to lead him down different paths. Despite moments where Rand leans towards darkness and distances himself from his companions and dear ones, he eventually decides to confront the Dark One head-on.
7. Moiraine & The Aes Sedai’s Future After Elaida’s Coup
Would Moiraine Survive In The Show?
In the TV adaptation of “The Wheel of Time,” predicting Moiraine’s journey can be quite complex since she seemingly perishes in combat with Lanfear in the novels, only to be rescued by Mat later. Since Moiraine survives her fight on the show and it’s unlikely that Amazon would write off its main character and producer, I found myself expecting Moiraine to assume the role previously held by Siuan Sanche from the books.
In the finale of season 3 of The Wheel of Time, the character Siuan Sanche, who holds the position of Amyrlin Seat, meets her end during Elaida’s coup. Interestingly, this event doesn’t happen in the books. Given the show’s portrayal of a romantic connection between Moiraine and Siuan, I envision that Moiraine might take up Siuan’s role, journeying to Salidar and collaborating with others to establish the rebellious faction of Aes Sedai, standing against Elaida’s White Tower.
6. Perrin Was Taken Captive By The White Cloaks
Perrin Would Face Trial By The Children Of The Light
In the books, Perrin valiantly protected the Two Rivers against the Trollocs and White Cloaks. Yet, contrary to that, the TV series portrayed him surrendering to Dain Bornhald and the White Cloaks. This discrepancy wasn’t present in “The Fires of Heaven,” leading me to expect his struggle with the White Cloaks would unfold in “Towers of Midnight.” As the story progressed across “The Wheel of Time” series, Perrin has consistently evolved as both a leader and warrior, rallying forces from the Two Rivers and beyond for the Last Battle.
5. Mat Made A Deal With The Eelfinn
Mat Eventually Becomes A Beloved Hero
Mat’s tale in the finale of The Wheel of Time season 3 took an unexpected twist when he passed through a redstone gateway and encountered an Eelfinn, a fox-like entity from another dimension. Asta’veren, Mat is pivotal to the grand storyline of The Wheel of Time, but initially hesitates to shoulder responsibility, preferring to stay clear of significant events. As the books unfold, he discovers his role and utilizes the recollections of ancient generals to become a skilled strategist and commander.
Mat’s television portrayal underwent numerous alterations, placing it almost entirely in a different setting compared to his book counterpart at virtually every turn. The series seldom delved into his internal struggles, which were prominently featured in his point-of-view chapters in books such as “The Dragon Reborn” and “The Shadow Rising”. Season 4 could have provided an opportunity to rectify this, especially considering Mat’s new medallion that safeguards him from the One Power, making him a crucial figure in thwarting a Forsaken.
4. Nynaeve’s Channeling Block & Pursuit Of Moghedien
Nynaeve Becomes A Powerful Aes Sedai & A Queen
In the season 3 finale, one of the most impactful scenes from the book series was portrayed, where Nynaeve overcame the restriction on her channeling abilities that had been in place since season 1. Previously, she could only harness the One Power when angry. Now, however, Nynaeve has unlocked her full potential, able to draw upon her strength at will. Future storylines for Nynaeve may involve tracking down Moghedien, with Liandrin possibly getting involved as well. Liandrin’s character in these stories is expected to undergo significant changes compared to her depiction in the books.
Nynaeve’s extraordinary abilities as a channeler enable her to perform remarkable acts, including reversing the gentling on Logain, reinstating his power, and mending him. Furthermore, the long-awaited relationship between Nynaeve and Lan deepens, culminating in their marriage.
3. Elayne’s Kingdom Is Under Threat From A Forsaken
Elayne Becomes Queen Of Andor
As a passionate film enthusiast immersed in the world of ‘The Wheel of Time’, I found myself astonished by the revelations Elayne uncovered about her past and future during our stay in Tanchico. These discoveries could potentially reshape the narrative of her book, but they seem to be guiding her back towards Caemlyn, the grand capital of Andor in the series.
In the novels, Elayne persists in her quest alongside Nynaeve to subdue Moghedien. Yet, in this captivating adaptation, it appears that events are steering her on a path towards returning to Caemlyn. The intrigue deepens as Queen Morgase Trakand, Elayne’s mother, has been ensnared by the sinister influence of the Forsaken, Rahvin, using the power of Compulsion.
In the third season, Elayne reconnects with her birth father, Thom Merrilin, setting up what appears to be a collaborative quest between them, aimed at rescuing Andor and restoring its kingdom. A ter’angreal rod that Elayne obtained suggests she may use balefire to vanquish Rahvin. Furthermore, Elayne is prophesied to ascend the throne herself and will become one of the three women bound romantically with Rand al’Thor.
2. Egwene’s Dreamwalking Ability & Growing Power
Egwene Wins Back The Aes Sedai As Amyrlin Seat
Similar to Nynaeve, Egwene possesses strong channeling abilities and showed her prowess as a Dreamwalker in season 3. The next phase of Egwene’s adventure would lead her to Salidar, where she ultimately ascends to the position of Amyrlin Seat among the Aes Sedai. Her lack of knowledge about Aes Sedai politics played a significant role in her selection, as the rebellious Aes Sedai sought someone untouched by the ongoing conflicts. In the books, Siuan Sanche mentors Egwene in Aes Sedai politics; this guidance could have been provided by Moiraine in the television series.
1. Lan Is The Heir To A Fallen Kingdom
Lan Reclaims Malkier & Leads His Armies In The Last Battle
In season 3, Lan serves as Moiraine’s Warder, but his storyline takes a more secondary role compared to hers due to her unpredictable journey in the TV adaptation. Given the complexity of Moiraine’s plot, developing Lan’s narrative could have been equally challenging. Later on, after an apparent death of Moiraine, Lan becomes involved with Nynaeve, eventually marrying her and realizing a long-standing romantic connection. Nynaeve assists Lan in rallying the forces of Malkier, which he then leads in the Last Battle. By the end of ‘The Wheel of Time’, Lan reclaims his throne as king and begins the process of rebuilding.
