As a dedicated follower of the fascinating lives of these esteemed figures in Bollywood, I find it intriguing to delve into the untold stories that bind Anurag Kashyap and Shah Rukh Khan, despite their divergent paths in filmmaking. Their shared alma mater, the University of Delhi, serves as a testament to their roots in the heart of India’s capital city.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it like this: Despite both of us being alumni of the University of Delhi in the 90s – me with a zoology degree from Hansraj College and Shah Rukh Khan with an economics degree from ’88 – we’ve never collaborated on a project. The reason, as Anurag Kashyap puts it, is that he feels SRK has an enigmatic presence that he hasn’t quite figured out how to tap into. Interestingly, there was a moment when I found myself at Shah Rukh’s home (Mannat), hungry and in need of sustenance. To my surprise, I discovered that he had the knack for whipping up delicious omelets!
In a 2020 interview with Midday, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap shared a story about dropping by Shah Rukh Khan’s home, Mannat, when he was feeling peckish. Notably, SRK prepared and served him some omelettes.
Once, I visited Shah Rukh Khan’s home thanks to my college ties. I recall him preparing and serving me an omelet. It seems he was quite skilled at making just that. Reminiscing about those times, the filmmaker once mentioned something along those lines.
In the 90s, Anurag shared a glimpse of his tough times, when he used to stand near the sets of Shah Rukh Khan’s 1998 film, Duplicate. Reminiscing, the director of Gangs of Wasseypur stated that he used to hold Mahesh Bhatt’s books during a time when he was famished and lacked money. He also mentioned that he knew SRK from their college days, which prevented him from feeling daunted by his presence.
Later, the actor portraying the ‘Tough Cop’ nostalgically shared an incident where he met the late producer Yash Johar on set. He mentioned that Yash Johar intuitively noticed his hunger and urged him to eat something. Anurag fondly remembered this kind and wonderful man taking him aside and personally offering food, reminding him of the compassionate action by the director from the Kennedy film family.
Regarding the question of why Anurag Kashyap and Shah Rukh Khan haven’t collaborated on a movie, Anurag Kashyap shared with Humans of Cinema that he finds the fanbases of big-name stars intimidating. He confessed that he feels unable to meet the expectations set by SRK’s stardom. The director of Gulaal further mentioned that he would muster the “confidence” to work with Shah Rukh Khan only if his 2016 film, Fan had been successful.
In terms of work, Anurag Kashyap recently directed Kennedy in 2023. Acting-wise, he featured in the series Bad Cop this year. Shah Rukh Khan is set to star in Sujoy Ghosh’s upcoming film King, alongside Suhana Khan and Abhishek Bachchan.
