When Govinda and David Dhawan replaced Saroj Khan with Ganesh Acharya to choreograph THIS Coolie No.1 song

As a dedicated follower of Bollywood, I must say that Govinda’s collaboration with David Dhawan and choreographer Ganesh Acharya in the ’90s was nothing short of magic! The dance moves, the laughter, the hits – it was a golden era for comedy and music.

In the ’90s, Govinda frequently teamed up with director David Dhawan on various films. Besides his knack for comedy, Govinda was widely recognized for his dancing talents in these productions. This recognition is largely due to renowned choreographer Ganesh Acharya, who worked alongside Govinda in an impressive 150 movies. Recently, Ganesh shared a memory about how he replaced the late choreographer Saroj Khan in Coolie No. 1 (1995), a role that both Govinda and David Dhawan took over for him.

In the latest episode of Friday Talkies, Ganesh Acharya shared memories of being asked to create the dance routine for the hit song “Husn Hai Suhana” from the movie Coolie No. 1. This iconic number showcased Govinda and Karisma Kapoor.

Acharya reminisced about periods when renowned dance directors like Saroj Khan and Chinni Prakash held significant influence within the entertainment industry. Yet it was Govinda and David Dhawan who eagerly offered him a chance.

The choreographer from Coolie No. 1 mentioned that Producer Ramesh Taurani wished for Saroj ji to create a big hit track, while Govinda and David Dhawan desired for me to sing this song.

Ganesh Acharya shared more insights, stating that when Ramesh Taurani set dates with Saroj Khan, it often happened that Govinda and David Dhawan claimed they couldn’t make those specific times.

Before the movie premiere, the choreographer recalled that the actor-director pair had mentioned those specific four days as unavailable for Saroj and Chinni. Subsequently, they proposed Acharya as a replacement, explaining that he was available and willing to take on the task.

Ganesh Acharya reminisced about the time he met Govinda, which was prompted by his sister suggesting they work together due to their compatible dancing styles. However, securing a job with him wasn’t straightforward. In fact, Acharya shared that he spent six long months patiently waiting outside Govinda’s building, when the actor was among the most popular stars in the industry.

Later on, Govinda requested Acharya to create a dance number for his movie, Prem Shakti, which was released in 1994. Acharya had only two days to film this sequence, and Govinda would appear for an hour every day. Despite the time constraints, Acharya completed the song within two hours, leaving a favorable impression on Govinda due to his efficiency.

As a seasoned lifestyle guru, I’ve had the pleasure of lending my choreographic talents to numerous films featuring the charismatic Govinda. Some of these movies include Saajan Chale Sasural, Chhote Sarkar, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Haseena Maan Jayegi, Hadh Kar Di Aapne, and a host of other memorable productions. It’s been an absolute joy to contribute to his iconic dance sequences!
