Interestingly, an old confession from the actor has resurfaced, revealing that he once called off his engagement with Sunita, secretly yearning to resemble Neelam Kothari instead. He also admitted to keeping his marriage with Sunita hidden from Neelam, acknowledging that his actions were unjust.

In a 1990 interview with Stardust (as reported by Indian Express), Govinda spoke candidly about his relationship with Neelam Kothari. Initially, their diverse backgrounds gave him pause, but as they frequently worked together on various film sets, their friendship grew stronger and he found himself deeply attracted to her.

In his presence with Sunita at the time, the actor frequently couldn’t help but appreciate Neelam deeply. This admiration prompted him to draw comparisons between Sunita and Neelam, encouraging Sunita to emulate some of Neelam’s qualities.

He suggested that Sunita should transform herself to be more like Neelam, learn from her, and he showed no mercy. This suggestion caused friction in their relationship, as Sunita refused to alter her identity for anyone.

In the heat of an argument with Sunita, a remark about Neelam led Govinda to terminate their engagement. He explained, “I asked Sunita to depart from my life. I called off our engagement.” He acknowledged that if Sunita hadn’t contacted him after five days, encouraging him to reconsider, he might have chosen to build a future with Neelam. However, his feelings of responsibility towards Sunita stopped him from severing their connection entirely.

Govinda understood that Neelam Kothari, who was dedicated to her profession, didn’t feel ready for marriage then. He believed that their contrasting social backdrops – her refined upbringing versus his humble origins – might have posed challenges in maintaining a relationship over the long term.

Following his marriage to Sunita, Govinda chose to keep the news hidden, even from Neelam who remained a close work associate. In simpler terms, he acknowledged that he had acted deceitfully towards her and should have been upfront about being married.

Fueling the speculation is his reported closeness with a 30-year-old Marathi actress, though no names have been disclosed yet. This rumored relationship might be contributing to the growing distance between them.
