As a connoisseur of lifestyle and culture, I must say that the illustrious Bollywood actress Kajol has graced our screens with an array of unforgettable performances throughout her career. Yet, her mother, Tanuja, is not often found expressing her admiration for Kajol’s films. Recently, Kajol recounted a touching tale about her mother’s response to the film Gupt, revealing that despite seldom showing enthusiasm for her cinematic endeavors, Tanuja exclaimed, ‘Oh my God, what a movie!’ upon watching Gupt. For Kajol, this unsolicited praise was the highest compliment she could ever receive.
In an interview with PTI, Kajol recalled her mother Tanuja’s response to the movie Gupt. She said, “I clearly remember my mom exclaiming, ‘What a fantastic film!’ That’s the greatest compliment for me since my mother seldom appreciates my movies. However, she often admires my acting performances rather than the films themselves.
Actress from Do Patti mused over the stark contrast between the movie world of yesteryears and today, pointing out that in her initial years, the array of entertainment choices was limited, which made determining a film’s success easier.
She pointed out that in the past, when there were fewer distractions such as social media and entertainment options, a major movie had a better chance of being successful because it faced less competition. Additionally, reaching milestones like 25 weeks in theaters or celebrating a golden jubilee (50th anniversary) was more attainable due to the limited number of films available. However, today, the landscape has significantly changed with the emergence of numerous digital platforms, making the competition much stiffer.
Kajol revealed that what drew her to Gupt was its surprising impact, the audacity of the character, and the unconventional aspect of the movie. The captivating plot and part left her yearning to tackle the task head-on.
Initially, director Rajiv Rai was hesitant, questioning if Kajol would take on the role. However, after a lengthy two-hour explanation, during which he seemed quite apprehensive, both Kajol and her sister Tanisha immediately felt that the movie suited Kajol perfectly.
1997’s Gupt: The Hidden Truth is a gripping suspense thriller, skillfully directed by Rajiv Rai. The film features Bobby Deol, Manisha Koirala, Kajol in leading roles, with an impressive supporting cast that includes Om Puri, Paresh Rawal, Dalip Tahil, Prem Chopra, Priya Tendulkar, Raj Babbar, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda in extended appearances.
