Manoj Bajpayee‘s journey to becoming a renowned Hindi film actor began with repeated rejections from the National School of Drama. Despite this, his childhood dream of acting persisted, leading him to secure minor roles in films like Bandit Queen and Drohkaal. It was the 1998 crime film Satya that truly catapulted him into stardom. In an interview, the actor reminisced about feeling uncomfortable at luxury hotels following the film’s success. However, it was fellow actor Akshaye Khanna who aided him in embracing his newfound accomplishment.
Manoj Bajpayee’s exceptional talent in Satya earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. This film turned out to be both a commercial and critical hit, catapulting him into stardom almost immediately. Although the public was captivated by his abilities, the actor himself struggled to cope with the sudden success and fame. In an interview with Mid-Day, Manoj confessed that he felt uncomfortable in luxury hotels. Additionally, he shared feelings of unease when finding himself seated within his own car.
After observing his discomfort, actor Akshaye Khanna said to him, “Manoj, why do you seem so troubled by your success? Embrace it.” Explaining his feelings at the time, the Gangs of Wasseypur star admitted that he wasn’t accustomed to success because it had been a while since he experienced it. Whenever people ask him if he’s comfortable with all the attention, the actor firmly responds “No.” He added that it’s flattering for others to assume he’s comfortable, but for 25 years he hadn’t received that level of attention until he became a star.
Recently, on my professional journey, I’ve been keeping quite busy. Last year, you might have caught me in several films such as The Fable, Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout, Bhaiyya Ji, and Despatch, all of which hit theaters in 2024. Additionally, I had the pleasure of acting alongside Konkona Sen Sharma in the TV series, Killer Soup. For those who may not be aware, a re-release of Ram Gopal Varma’s classic, Satya, is set to grace the screens at PVR INOX on January 17, 2025.
