The lavish wedding of actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone was further enhanced by the moving renditions of Harshdeep Kaur. Notably, the singer disclosed that Ranveer often tunes into her music each morning.
In a recent conversation with The Music Podcast, Harshdeep Kaur shared that she has a profound personal bond with the prayer “Ik Onkar.” This song not only marked a substantial point in her partnership with A.R. Rahman, but it also granted her the opportunity to perform at Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s lavish wedding held in Lake Como.
She mentioned that Ranveer is deeply fond of this prayer. He phoned her and expressed, ‘I hear your voice each morning, and on the most significant day in my life, I hope you’ll be there, reciting Ik Onkar.’
Recently, Harshdeep candidly shared tales from her remarkable experience collaborating with the esteemed A.R. Rahman. She fondly reminisced about the fulfillment of every singer’s dream – meeting Rahman.
Apart from simply meeting him, she also had a remarkable chance to perform for him in the famous Aamir Khan movie, Rang De Basanti. Interestingly, it was during the trials for the 2005 film Kisna that she initially crossed paths with Rahman. Intriguingly, among five contenders vying for the same position, Rahman requested her to audition first.
Harshdeep clearly remembered the instance, stating that Rahman was composing the background score for ‘Kisna’ and requested her to sing the chorus. Filled with confidence about seizing this opportunity, she performed three songs for him, noting that Rahman remained remarkably patient during the entire process.
Following my audition, I chose to leave things up to fate, and low and behold, a few months later, I got a call directly from the legendary A.R. Rahman himself, inviting me to lend my voice to Rang De Basanti. The task he set before me was daunting – to sing a prayer deeply rooted in the rich traditions of the Golden Temple. I threw myself into understanding its profound essence, even carrying a book to help me decipher its meaning.
One memorable story Harshdeep recounted was about Rahman’s determination to record a prayer at its traditional 4 a.m. time. Even though they both arrived at the studio at 8 p.m., he spent hours waiting for the perfect moment. At exactly 4 a.m., he directed her to sing, which created an almost spiritual ambiance.
Harshdeep expressed that it seemed like God was by her side at that particular instant, labeling the encounter as a profoundly spiritual event she’d always remember.
