As an ardent fan who has lived and breathed Bollywood for as long as I can remember, reading about the behind-the-scenes chaos of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’s iconic song, Bole Chudiyan, is like diving into a treasure trove of cinematic lore. The anecdotes shared by Nikkhil Advani, the film’s assistant director, transport me back to the golden era of Bollywood where stardom and camaraderie intertwined in a dance of epic proportions.
“Karan Johar’s movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, a massive hit in Bollywood, featured six main actors collaborating. More recently, Nikkhil Advani, who served as an assistant director on the film, reminisced about events that took place during the filming of the popular song, Bole Chudiyan. He shared an amusing incident where actors like Shah Rukh Khan would wait for Hrithik to arrive before they stepped out to shoot the song. Before appearing, Hrithik inquired about Kareena Kapoor’s whereabouts, adding a touch of humor to the scene.
During an open conversation with Filmfare, Nikkhil Advani shared insights into the process of filming the well-known wedding anthem, Bole Chudiyan, a tune frequently played at Indian nuptials.
In a reminiscence, the director spoke about intriguing moments from the production and shared that it was quite a task to manage the complex logistics involving six of Bollywood’s top-tier stars – Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor, and Hrithik Roshan – on set during filming.
Advani explained that they had multiple mobile dressing rooms (vanity vans) on the filming location, one for each actor. It was crucial to make sure everyone was prepared for the shooting. However, what should have been a straightforward task turned into a challenge as no one wanted to depart. This left everyone curious about the status of their fellow actors. Consequently, even with a brilliantly illuminated and aesthetically pleasing set reminiscent of Diwali festivities, the cast on set found themselves pondering the whereabouts of the lead performers.
Reflecting on the incident, the director of Salaam-E-Ishq stated, “When I arrived, I informed Kajol that the shot was prepared. She inquired, ‘Is Shah Rukh here?’ I replied negatively. She instructed me to tell him to come, then she would follow. I approached Shah Rukh, who questioned, ‘Has Hrithik arrived? Tell him to show up, and then I’ll be there.’ I went to Hrithik, who asked, ‘Has Bebo arrived? Inform her to join us, and then I will.’ I approached Jaya ji, who inquired, ‘Has the old man arrived yet?’ I said no. So nobody had arrived.
To clear up the confusion when he couldn’t find a solution otherwise, the filmmaker devised an alternate plan. He gathered additional assistant directors and stationed them near various actor’s trailers, using walkie-talkies to stay in touch. However, they struggled to communicate effectively with one another.
Afterward, he shared the same information with Jaya Bachchan and promised a coordinated exit for all the actors. This allowed them to gather everybody on set at once, marking the start of filming.
Nikkhil pointed out that upon their arrival on set, the actors developed a strong camaraderie and maintained a high level of professionalism. Consequently, the shooting process ran smoothly, and there was an overall positive atmosphere on set. He disclosed that the actors exchanged compliments, shared jokes, and enjoyed collaborating. Advani added that Jaya Bachchan and Kajol even spoke in the Bengali language during breaks.
Nevertheless, Karan Johar, the film’s director, collapsed at the end due to his intense communication with crew members over walkie-talkies while orchestrating events on the bustling multi-star production set. Regardless, this shooting adventure will be long remembered as it produced one of Bollywood’s most beloved wedding songs.
