As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds and musical theater alike, I must say that the upcoming “Wicked Part 2” movie is shaping up to be an emotional rollercoaster. Having grown up with the original Broadway production, I remember the impact of Glinda’s song “Thank Goodness,” and I can only imagine how Ariana Grande will bring it to life on the big screen.
Although unconventional musicals hold their own in the theater scene, the stage adaptation of “Wicked” stands out as a popular hit that has graced Broadway for twenty years. The long-awaited film version of the play is now playing in cinemas, and it’s sure to make you cry buckets. When “Part 2” is released, I must admit that I’m not mentally prepared to endure one particular song – specifically, Glinda’s heartfelt ballad “Thank Goodness.
As a passionate gamer, I can’t hide my excitement about the star-studded cast of the upcoming “Wicked” movie! The lead roles are gracefully handled by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, portraying Elphaba and Glinda respectively. Some fans had reservations about Grande stepping into the role, but she absolutely knocked it out of the park in the initial film. That’s why I can confidently say that her rendition of “Thank Goodness” is going to leave us all heartbroken!
In the stage play, “Thank Goodness” serves as the significant opening number of Act 2, serving to update the audience about the time leap since “Defying Gravity.” At this point, Glinda and Fiyero are engaged, yet it’s evident that he still harbors feelings for Elphaba. Simultaneously, despite putting on a brave front while working with The Wizard, Glinda is discontent and longs for her dearest friend.
Many people are singing high praises for the Wicked film, with Ariana Grande’s multi-dimensional portrayal of Galinda/Glinda receiving particular acclaim. This positive feedback extends to TopMob’s review of Wicked, as Grande managed to perfectly embody the cherished character. Although Grande was hilarious, particularly in “Popular”, her moments of vulnerability were truly impactful. The depth of this is most apparent at the end of “Dancing Through Life”, where Glinda expresses regret for bullying her roommate and the two share a dance, tears, and a heartfelt connection for the first time.
During “Defying Gravity”, Grande gave a deeply emotional performance, enveloping Elphaba in a cloak before she soared. She showed great depth and I believe her portrayal of Glinda in “Thank Goodness” will offer a nuanced glimpse into her character’s feelings. Given the tears I shed during the initial movie, I’ll undoubtedly need tissues for this one too.
It was smart of the creators to split the story of Wicked into two movies, as it allowed for a more detailed exploration of characters and plot without having to omit any songs during the first film. The audience can expect even greater satisfaction when the storylines set up in the first movie fully develop in Wicked Part 2, which is due out next year.
While Grande and Erivo may receive some playful mockery for crying during their extended press tour, this emotionality could actually benefit the Wicked films. Both actresses delivered profoundly moving performances, and it appears their friendship mirrors that of their characters’. I have no doubt that they will bring tears to many viewers’ eyes in the second movie as well.
